PROGRESS

Developing beautiful and inviting grounds and facilities

Goal: Enhance the campus’ beauty.

Progress:

  • A new master plan has been developed, parts of which call for a much larger, green pedestrian mall in the center of campus and multiple, more convenient and attractive entrances. The northern-most portion of the campus’ green space—the Main Quad—has been improved and reseeded.

  • President Gonzalez has formed a new Sustainability Committee to ensure that our operational and building practices are environmentally sound.

  • More prominent Sacramento State identification has been placed at both the north and south entrances to the University.

  • The University Union completed the enhancement of its east walkway, adding 250 seats and vine-covered trellises, and a hard cover over the patio with heat and ceiling fans for year-round use.

  • University Enterprises, Inc. sponsored the expansion of Serna Plaza to connect the University Union to the new Hornet Bookstore.

  • A major redevelopment of the front campus Esplanade is included in the planning for the future Sac State Tram that will improve traffic flow and alternative transit access to and from campus.

Goal:
Make the campus easier to navigate for visitors.

Progress:

  • A student and faculty team designed signage and the University has installed way-finding information signs throughout campus.
  • Currently available self-guided tours will be updated, tied to cell-phone commentary at prominent campus markers, and incorporated into the signage implementation.
  • Kiosks have been placed strategically around the campus to assist students and the public to make this a friendly and easy to navigate campus.

Goal:
Make parking easier.

Progress:

  • The campus master plan calls for development of alternative transportation modes and consolidation of parking to free more space for other uses.
  • A new 3,100-space parking facility at the south end of campus opened in January 2007, greatly easing parking problems and facilitating event parking.
  • University Transportation and Parking Services will soon implement service from the off-campus Rapid Transit light-rail station to various locations on campus.

Goal:
Display courtesy, respect and responsiveness to all visitors and members of the campus community.

Progress:

  • All units on campus are being asked to emphasize “service” to the public as among the most important features of campus culture.
  • Seeking to improve communication among campus personnel as well as with visitors to our campus, the Office of Human Resources and the College of Continuing Education jointly developed a training series on effective service for University employees.
  • The University Union has added a private Mothers’ Room, complete with sink and changing table, as well as a unisex restroom to its facility in response to customer requests.

Goal:
Increase public safety outreach and educational programs to the campus community.

Progress:

  • A comprehensive Emergency Notification System (ENS), capable of notifying and updating faculty, staff and students during emergencies, was implemented in April 2008.
  • In 2006, Public Safety emphasized training in the National Incident Management System (NIMS), the State Emergency Management System (SEMS), as well as active shooter and violence in the workplace training to meet federal, state and CSU mandates. To date, more than 1,000 campus employees have been trained.
  • The Office of Public Safety recently provided training to the Housing and Residential Life staff on reporting crimes and requesting police services.
  • The Office of Public Safety has increased its safety and crime prevention presentations for the campus community by close to 50 percent since 2005, conducting more than 150 presentations each year.
  • Public Safety’s practice of sending case follow-up letters to crime victims and reporting parties has built positive public relations and encouraged repeated contact where additional case information can be gathered to help solve crimes.
  • A new digital sign at the south entrance to campus will provide immediate notice of campus emergencies and access by the California Highway Patrol for Amber Alerts.

Goal:
Implement a “problem-oriented” policing program

Progress:

  • The Office of Public Safety has expanded its contingent of officers assigned to bicycle patrol and increased the number of Community Service Officers on patrol.
  • The Office of Public Safety has appointed a communication liaison to work collaboratively with the staff of Housing and Residential Life to resolve policing issues and concerns.
  • The Office of Public Safety will continue its police officer “sport cards” initiative by assigning officers to specific buildings as a way to increase contact, build relationships with building residents and create a dialogue with the campus community to enhance problem-solving.
