PROGRESS
Becoming
a regional event destination
Goal:
Expand our capacity to host major events
Progress:
- Currently on Sacramento State’s drawing board as part of the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex is a new 6,000- to 8,000-seat indoor arena. The facility will host concerts, sporting events and conventions.
- Improvement of the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex continues via a generous $10 million gift from Alex and Faye Spanos.
- The new Eli and Edythe Broad Fieldhouse within the Spanos Sports Complex, launched with a generous $2 million gift from the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation, opened in 2008. The building was completed entirely through philanthropic gifts.
- We secured private donations to remodel the theatre lobby in Shasta Hall. We are seeking financial support for construction of a performing arts center to offer and attract major music and theatre events.
- The University’s College of Arts and Letters continues to provide the region with exhibits, performances and concerts that highlight the University’s range in the fine arts.
- The Sokku Nakatani Tea Room and Garden opened on the lower level of the University Library. An anonymous donor contributed the funds for the construction of the tearoom, as well as an endowment fund for its maintenance and for programming and outreach.
- The University Union and the Alumni Center have improved their facilities and expanded their event-use marketing efforts to off-campus organizations. In 2007-08, the University Union handled 8,900 reservations that brought more than a half a million people to campus.
- The University (through University Enterprises, Inc.) is developing a Sac State Tram (Bus Rapid Transit) that will provide fast “people-mover” style transportation from Light Rail to and around the campus.
- The University has improved its scheduling capabilities through Ad Astra Scheduling software with a focus on event scheduling, related event services and event billing and reporting.
Goal: Increase awareness of and interest in campus events among
the campus community and the region.
Progress:
- Event advertising has been expanded in local media such as the Sacramento Bee, Comstock’s magazine and Capital Public Radio.
- The campus has launched an online calendar with comprehensive listings of campus activities (www.calendar.csus.edu).
- Sac State Magazine, which includes a calendar of events and is distributed to about 100,000 alumni and friends of the University, is now published four times a year rather than two.
- University Enterprises, Inc. has sponsored the installation of an electronic digital sign near the south entrance to campus. The sign features advertising and provides the campus additional visibility from Highway 50 and opportunities to promote campus events and accomplishments.
- A revamp of the University’s homepage features a special section for events, as well as campus initiatives. Major events are being promoted more prominently on the page through the use of graphics.
- The Sacramento State Ticket Office has developed an e-mail newsletter to promote upcoming events. It has also partnered with Tickets.com to promote events.
