Part-Time, Seasonal, and Temporary Employee Retirement Plan
Fellows are not members of the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). However, federal law mandates that Fellows participate in a retirement plan. The appropriate public retirement plan is the Part-Time, Seasonal, and Temporary Employee Retirement Plan (PST). Participation requires that 7.5% of the monthly stipend be retained as deferred compensation. Ninety days following the conclusion of the fellowship, Fellows may rollover their plan contribution to an IRA, 401(k), 403(b), or 457 Plan. If the funds are not rolled over, your account balance is under $1,000, and has been inactive for more than 24 months, a force out payment will incur and will be considered income. If you have not had any paycheck deductions into or out of your PST account for three years, your account may be considered “unclaimed” (dormant). Savings Plus transfers dormant accounts to the State Controller's Office's (SCO) Division of Unclaimed Property. Once this happens, you need to submit a claim form to the SCO to get your money back.
