Sutter Volunteer Program

Sutter Hospital, working in collaboration with the Sac State Career Center, places over 100 Sacramento State students each spring in volunteer positions through the Sutter Hospital, Sacramento. You can volunteer at a variety of locations where you will get exposure to many of the different components of the healthcare field. To volunteer through this program, you must carefully review the timeline and specific instructions outlined below.

Please note: 

  • This program only places students during the spring semester.
  • This program is open to all majors but some placements may prefer certain majors such as the Pharmacy Department prefers Pre-Pharmaceutical Biology majors.
  • Alumni are not eligible to participate but please visit the FAQ page for information on other opportunities.
  • If you wish to participate, you will be required to show proof that you have received the necessary immunizations. For a list of immunizations required by Sutter, Click Here.
  • Most volunteer unit assignments are located at Ose Adams Medical Pavilion or Anderson Lucchetti Women's and Children's Hospital. However, some assignments are at other Sutter Medical Center locations in the Sacramento area including: Old Tavern Building or Sutter Capitol Pavilion. Click here for a printable map of Sutter Hospital
  • You will have to complete an assigned background check which is approximately $43.00, as well as purchase scrubs and a photo I.D. badge for around $20.00.
  • Please be aware that placement is not guaranteed.
  • If placed, you must attend Sutter’s On-site Orientation, which will be communciated to those selected. On-time attendance is mandatory. You will be dropped from the program if you cannot attend this Orientation or if you arrive late.

Program Requirements

  • Must be a currently enrolled Sac State undergraduate student or graduate student.
  • Undergraduate student must have a minimum of 60 or more units completed by the end of the Fall 2017 semester.
  • Able to commit to completing a total of 100 hours at a rate of 4 hours per week. Hours must be completed in the spring and summer of the year you are placed.
  • Able to meet the immunization requirements to work in a hospital. Click Here
  • Able to meet the financial requirements to get the immunizations required, Background Check, and uniform.
  • Able to commit to attending both Sac State campus informational and Sutter Hospital orientation.
  • Reliable transportation to get to your placement site.

Note: The Sac State Sutter Hospital Volunteer program is only open to currently enrolled undergraduate students who will have completed 60 or more units by the end of the Fall 2017 semester and currently enrolled graduate students.

Step 1 Register online for the mandatory Sutter Volunteer Program Informational held on Sac State campus on Saturday, November 4, 2017, 9am – 11am located in the University Union, Hinde Auditorium. In order to attend you must RSVP at: CLICK HERE TO RSVPYou must attend the entire orientation session - no exceptions will be made.

At the Sac State Sutter Volunteer Program Orientation, you will learn about the program and receive important information regarding the application such as instructions on completing the application and important deadlines. The application will be sent upon completion of the orientation to the email you provide during the orientation check-in process. The orientation is mandatory. Applicants who do not attend the orientation will not be placed.

Step 2 Completed application packets are due to the Career Center (Lassen Hall 1013) by 5:00 pm on Friday, December 1, 2017. You are also required to submit a minimum of 500 word Letter of Purpose with your application. Incomplete, late or incorrect information will disqualify the applicant.

Step 3 – On Tuesday, December 12, 2017 you will be notified what department you have been placed in. You must accept your assignment by 12:00pm (Noon) on Wednesday, December 14, 2017 through an online response system that will be emailed to you. If you do not accept your placement by the deadline, it will be given to an alternate.

Step 4 – All students with confirmed placements will be required to do the following:
Complete an online background check by Friday, January 12, 2018. Instructions will be sent through email once assignments have been accepted.

Step 5 – Attend the mandatory Sutter “On-site” Orientation, which information will be communcated to you if you are selected. If you arrive more than 15 minutes late, you will not be admitted and will forfeit your placement.
