Teaching Credential Emphasis

The English Subject Matter Program (SMP) is designed for students planning to teach English at the secondary school level. Completion of this program satisfies the English Department's requirements for the major and demonstrates subject matter competency necessary for an application to a Teacher Preparation Program. Students should establish a file with the English Education Adviser and see the adviser once each semester. Appointments can be made by emailing Professor Susan Fanetti (sfanetti@csus.edu ) or by calling 278-5734.


The current SMP requirements are as follows:

Core Courses (36 units)

  • ENGL 40B Introduction to British Literature II
  • ENGL 50A Introduction to American Literature I
  • ENGL 50B Introduction to American Literature II
  • ENGL 65 (Introduction to World Literature)
  • ENGL 120A (Advanced Composition)
  • ENGL 145B Shakespeare, Early Plays OR ENGL 145C Shakespeare, Later Plays
  • ENGL 198T (Senior Seminar)
  • ENGL 110A (Linguistics)
  • ENGL 110J (Traditional Grammar) OR ENGL 16 (Structure of English) OR English 110Q (Grammar for ESL)
  • ENGL 110P Second Language Learning and Teaching
  • ENGL 125B Writing and the Young Writer

  • Communication Studies 104 (Persuasive Public Speaking)

Extended Studies (12 Units)

  • ENGL 125A (Literature and Film for Adolescents)
  • English Elective
  • English Elective
  • English Elective

For subject matter competence, a minimum grade of B- and an average grade of B are required in the following courses: English 110A, English 110J, English 110P, English 120A, English 125A and English 125B.

Graduates of other programs wishing to waive the CSET should examine this list to see if they have completed similar courses. If they believe they have done so, they may have their transcripts evaluated by emailing Professor Susan Fanetti ( sfanetti@csus.edu) or by calling 278-5734. There is a $50.00 transcript evaluation fee.
