ADMISSION TO & DEGREE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MASTERS PROGRAM

APPLICATION PREPARATION

  • download and complete application
  • GRE not required
  • 3 letters of recommendation required for students applying from any university other than CSUS
  • it is best to have letters sent to the Graduate Coordinator, English Department, CSUS, Sacremanto, CA 95819
  • include transcripts for all colleges and universities attended
  • indicate somewhere in personal statement which emphasis you are pursuing--literature, composition, or creative writing
  • Creative Writing applicants must submit a sample of either poetry (5-6 poems) or prose (no more than 15 pages of fiction) either with the application or under separte cover to the Graduate Coordinator of English (screenplays, children's lit, or science fiction will not be considered)
  • all applications must be complete before the Graduate Studies Office will forward to the department--be sure everything is included before the submission deadline

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

In order to be admitted to the status of classified student in English, all students must have completed the following courses or their equivalents if arriving from another English program:

  • 2 British literature courses one of which must concern material before 1800 and one of which must be upper division
  • 2 American literature courses one of which must concern material before 1900 and one of which must be upper division
  • Advanced Composition (upper division, w/ a B or better)
  • Shakespeare (upper division)
  • an additional 12 upper division units
  • 3.0 upper division English GPA
  • 2.75 overall GPA in last 60 units of undergraduate study

Students studying at CSUS and pursuing the English major instituted in 2004 will be held to the following requirements, regardless of area of graduate interest (literature, creative writing, or composition):

Three of the following four literature surveys:
  • 40A Introduction to British Literature I
  • 40B Introduction to British Literature II
  • 50A Introduction to American Literature I
  • 50B Introduction to American Literature II

English 120A (Advanced Composition) completed w/ a B or better

English 145 B or C (Shakespeare)

Four upper division English literature courses

One upper division English course of student's choosing

GPA:

3.0 average in all upper division English classes

Total: 30 units

None of these requirements is subject to waiver.

STUDENTS APPLYING TO THE CREATIVE WRITING EMPHASIS

  • submit a sample of either fiction (no more than 15 pages) or poetry (5 or 6 poems) to the graduate coordinator under separate cover from application. Please do not submit screenplays, nonfiction, children's literature, or science fiction.

FOREIGN STUDENT ADMISSION

In addition to the requirements listed above, students from foreign universities must take the TOEFL test, which is administered in different formats (students need take only one format of the exam). Required scores for each format are as follows:

  • Paper Based TOEFL = 600, with a score of 5 on the Test of Written English (TWE)
  • Computer Based TOEFL = 250, with a score of 5 on the Test of Written English (TWE)
  • Internet Based TOEFL (IBT) = 100, with a minimum of 25 on the writing section

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

To earn a Master of Arts in English students must fulfill the following:

  • pass the Writing Proficiency Exam
  • complete a minimum of 30 units of graduate course work (for specifics see individual plans for required classes and areas)
  • maintain a 3.0 GPA
  • follow the steps for filing forms as indicated on chart at front of the Graduate Booklet
  • complete a thesis or pass the comprehensive exam
