The Wellness Center

Often in college students get so caught up in their busy schedules they get very little time for some much needed r and r.  After taking a test in class the results told me that my “wellness” was in much need of improvement, this to me was no surprise knowing my busy schedule, poor eating habits and poor sleeping habits.  So to do something about this I decided to visit the Wellness Center (for the obvious reasons!) in the Health Center.  The Heath Center is located on the north side of the campus near the main entrance to the university, across the street from the physical education gymnasiums and is for anyone with a One Card.  They are open Monday – Thursday from 8:00am to 4:30pm and on Fridays from 9:00am to 4:30pm. The Heath Center also offers a free insurance plan through a program called Family Pack for those who don’t have insurance.   I have Family Pact and it is really convenient because, being the poor college student I am, I don’t have to pay for anything.  I have visited the Health Center a few times before my visit to the Wellness Center.  The doctors I have had are very nice and seem to genuinely care about your health making my experiences there very good.

The Wellness Center is toward the back on the first floor.  It is the second door on the right hand side just after Fast Track, room 122.  There they offer three main services Lifestyle Assessment, Stress Management, and Dietary Analysis.  Their program’s goals are to enhance student health status and respond to student health needs through the use of educational programs, strategies and materials, and to provide students with information and resources that will facilitate voluntary and positive behavioral health changes.

ù  The Lifestyle Assessment is a computerized assessment that helps to analyze how your lifestyle behaviors may be affecting your health.  The test takes about thirty minutes to complete and an appointment must be made ahead of time.

ù  The Dietary Analysis is a computerized analysis of three days of dietary intake.  For three days, two of the days must be on weekdays and one day on a weekend, you record in detail everything you eat and drink.  The forms can be found in room 122 and upon completion of the form you drop it off in room 122 and can come back a week later for the results.

ù  The Stress Management program is an overview of stress management and opportunity to try out different types of stress management techniques including the relaxation chair and neck/eye herbal packs.  In addition to the information on the flyer that I was given, the intern told me that there are also free massages by appointment.  Stress Management appointments can also be made in room 122 and they are thirty minutes long.
