Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are the benefits of training to teach English to speakers of other languages?

A: One of the most common opportunities to live and work overseas is to teach English. TESOL program training can make you more competitive for jobs in language schools as well as for other types of teaching opportunities such as the Japan Exchange & Teaching (JET) Program or Fulbright Teaching Assistantships.

Q: I'm an English major. Can I take the TESOL Minor?

A: No, English majors cannot take a minor that's offered throught the English Deparmtent. However, you can complete the TESOL Certificate--Option A, which is similar to the Minor.

Q: Can I count courses from my major or other programs towards the minor?

A: Courses being applied to other degree programs cannot also be applied to the TESOL Minor.

Q: The TESOL Program also offers a Certificate in TESOL. Can I take both the Certificate and the Minor?

A: Yes, non-English majors can combine the TESOL Certificate--Option A with the TESOL Minor. The two programs are designed so that students can complete a university/ department requirement for a minor while also earning a qualification which is recognized and valued by overseas employers of English language teachers. However, the TESOL Certificate will only be issued to students who complete the required 15 units with a grade of B or better in each course.

Q: In what order should I take the courses?

A: You can take the courses in any order:

  • English 110A, English 110P, and English 110J are offered every semester
  • English 110Q is offered once per year (typically in the Fall semester)
  • One of English 125E, English 125F, or English 110C will be offered each semester in rotation.
  • Other courses in the 110 series are occasionally offered—check the schedule of classes for details.
