The mission of the Department of Environmental Studies at California State University, Sacramento, is to prepare students to understand and address environmental problems in their political, economic, social, ethical, and scientific contexts. We promote the use of an interdisciplinary approach to teaching and research, and we encourage the development of strong writing, research, and quantitative skills that give students the ability to identify the causes and consequences of human influence on the environment and to work toward sustainable solutions to complex environmental problems.
Environmental Studies Graduate Profile
My name is Kristen Ballew. I am a former Environmental Studies student and CSUS alumna. I currently work at the CA Department of Pesticide Regulation. Working as a Scientific Aid, I process and evaluate pesticide illness reports in California. My ENVS degree has helped build a strong foundation of technical and critical thinking skills. I have a dynamic view of modern day environmental issues, with this growing knowledge I am able to participate and contribute to staff discussions and research projects. I should also mention that my department is hiring for Scientific Aid positions. In the interest of receiving applications from qualified candidates, I volunteered to reach out to the CSUS Environmental Studies Department. Working as a Scientific Aid is a great opportunity, with amazing staff and schedule flexibility for busy students. It also provides the possibility to learn how the state and local governments work together to improve the quality of life for people and the environment. The ENVS program at CSU Sacramento has assisted me in beginning a career dedicated to improving the quality of life for people and the environment. The CSUS Environmental Studies Program is very near to my heart. I would enjoy seeing this program continue to grow and facilitate the success of its students.
