HISTORY OF SUMMER BRIDGE

In 1984, the EOP Summer Bridge Academy began at Sacramento State. The campus was selected as one of the pilot Summer Bridge Academy. There are several Summer Bridge Academies across the state at different universities. The primary missions of the program is to assist first time EOP freshman transition from high school to college by focusing on the academic, personal, and social development of each student. Today, the program serves approximately 250 students each summer. The majority of participants are the first in their family to attend college and come from low-income backgrounds.

The report concludes the following:

arrow_bullet The second year retention rate for SB participants has been higher than the rate of all first-time freshmen in the past 5 years (2005 – 2001)

arrow_bullet Summer Bridge participants have gained higher good standing rates than their peers who came from much better academic backgrounds.
