History and Program Assessment
HISTORY OF SUMMER BRIDGE
In 1984, the EOP Summer Bridge Academy began at Sacramento State. The campus was selected as one of the pilot Summer Bridge Academy. There are several Summer Bridge Academies across the state at different universities. The primary missions of the program is to assist first time EOP freshman transition from high school to college by focusing on the academic, personal, and social development of each student. Today, the program serves approximately 250 students each summer. The majority of participants are the first in their family to attend college and come from low-income backgrounds.
The positive impact of the EOP Summer Bridge Academy on participants is provided in the Sacramento State Office of Institutional Summary Report (Fall 1996 to Fall 2006). To access the report, please click at the following link: SBA Assessment Summary Report.pdf
The report concludes the following:
- The second year retention rate for SB participants has been higher than the rate of all first-time freshmen in the past 5 years (2005 – 2001)
- Summer Bridge participants have gained higher good standing rates than their peers who came from much better academic backgrounds.
