Alumnus Alan Wong takes China by storm with California sushi

Alan WongAlan Wong (Philosophy ’00) is widely credited as the first restaurateur to bring California-style sushi to China’s dining scene. As owner of 12 upscale restaurants with more than 800 employees, the 40-year-old is one of China’s most successful restaurant moguls. Now Wong is poised to open his lucky 13th restaurant at the brand-new Shanghai Disneyland, which is scheduled to open June 16.

Wong’s latest venture will be the crown jewel of his culinary empire. But by no means does he view it as an endpoint. “We’re always reinventing ourselves,” says Wong, who’s always challenging himself and his chefs to create new confections.

Fifteen years after moving to China, Wong says his philosophy education from Sacramento State still shapes how he runs his business. “If you have a strong philosophical background, there’s really more than one way to attack a problem,” he says.
