Mark Orr comes home to lead Sacramento State athletics
Sacramento State kicked off a new sports era this week with the appointment of Mark Orr as Director of Athletics. He will start in the position Monday, April 17.
President Robert S. Nelsen announced Orr’s selection at a news conference Monday at The WELL and welcomed the new AD to the Hornet Family along with his wife, April, and their young sons, Tyson and Jacob – who enjoyed a quick lesson from Nelsen on the proper way to do a “Stingers Up!”
Orr has served for the past decade as Director of Athletics and Recreational Sports at Saint Mary’s College of California in Moraga. Under his leadership, Saint Mary’s teams have qualified 17 times for the NCAA postseason, including the men’s basketball team advancing to the Sweet 16 in 2010, men’s soccer advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals in 2011, and the men’s golf team’s qualification to the NCAA Championships in 2008 and 2013.
The athletics leadership post marks a homecoming for Orr, who is a native of Sacramento and graduated from Christian Brothers High before heading to UC Berkeley, where he was a four-year letterman defensive back for Cal and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees. “We are thrilled to welcome Mark Orr and his family back to Sacramento where they belong,” President Nelsen said.
“The time is now … the time is now for Hornet athletics,” Orr told the crowd at The WELL. “There’s no time to wait – I can’t wait to get going. Stingers Up!”
