Apply Early

Students should file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.gov as soon as possible. The priority filing date for the FAFSA is always March 2.  Make sure that you also complete your financial aid file as early as possible.  The priority document submit date is June 1.  It takes approximately 6 to 8 weeks for our office to process your application and determine your eligibility.

Aid Eligibility

Financial aid for study abroad students is processed in the same manner as aid for students who are attending the home campus. However, the cost of attendance at partner universities abroad may be higher or lower than the cost of attendance at Sacramento State, which can affect the total amount of aid that is offered to you. Also, federal regulations limit financial aid eligibility to one semester for graduate students who study abroad.

Students in the CSU International Programs, are eligible for financial aid, including Federal Pell Grant, Cal Grant, State University Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Direct Loan, Federal Perkins Loan, and scholarships. Students cannot participate in the Federal Work Study program while participating in a study abroad program.

Scholarships

There are a number of resources for scholarships to study abroad, including the Institute of International Education at www.iie.org and International Education Financial Aid at www.iefa.org. In addition, we recommend picking up a listing of scholarships available for study abroad from the Office of Global Education. You should research scholarships which may be offered by your major department, local or national organizations affiliated with your academic field, your employer or your parents' employer, community organizations and clubs to which you belong, and your church or religious organization.

Costs

The estimated costs for participation in the CSU International Programs varies from country to country.  Estimates are provided in the country flyers available through the Programs page of CSU International Programs website.  If you are interested in studying in one of the participating countries, plan the financing of these costs as early as possible, particularly if you will be requesting financial aid to assist you.

Disbursement

Financial aid is disbursed according to the start of the term at Sacramento State regardless of the start date of your study abroad program. Any unpaid balance will automatically be deducted from your aid. Up-front costs which are due prior to the release of your financial aid, including deposits, cannot be waived based on anticipated aid disbursements.

Financial aid checks cannot be mailed out of the country, so we recommend that you sign up for eRefund to have your financial aid deposited directly into your bank account. Sign up online by clicking on Account Inquiry in your My Sac State Student Center. If you do not sign up for eRefund, your check will be mailed to the current address listed in your My Sac State, which must be an address in the United States.  If you leave the country before your first disbursement of aid, you should be prepared to cover your first two months of expenses.

Reminders

Please check your My Sac State Student Center at least four weeks before your departure to verify that your file is complete and that you have cleared any disbursement holds.
