Reaching out beyond the campus

Sacramento State is a vital community partner dedicated to establishing and maintaining strong connections to our community and alumni.

Our students, faculty and staff have a major commitment to community service and civic engagement. In fact, Sacramento State has been named to the 2009 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction by the Corporation for National and Community Service.

We have fostered partnerships with local businesses, non-profits and governmental agencies that benefit the community as well as our students. One program, the Center for California Studies Capital Fellows program, has been named one of the top 10 internship programs in the country by Vault.com.

In addition, private financial support provides scholarships, funding for academic programs and helps build student facilities.

Each year, we host a number of concerts, lectures, gallery showings, receptions and programs open to the campus community. A few of our more recent guests include

  • Maya Soetoro-Ng, sister of President Barack Obama
  • Bob Graham, former Florida governor and United States senator
  • Chuck D, founder and lead for the rap group Public Enemy
  • Eugene Robinson, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist and associate editor for the Washington Post
  • Julie Otsuka, author of When the Emperor Was Divine
  • Firoozeh Dumas, author of Funny in Farsi.
