Requirements for the Bachelor of Arts
with a Major in German

Total units required for a BA Degree: 124

Required for Major in German: 36 units

A. Required Lower Division Courses

There are no specific German course requirements. However, students must demonstrate competency equivalent to successful completion of German 2B or equivalent before beginning upper division work.

B. Required Upper Division Courses

(3) LING 130: Introduction to Language & Linguistics
(3) GERM 100: Advanced German Grammar
(3) GERM 101: Introduction to German Literature & Literary Criticism
(3) GERM 102: Advance Composition Prereq: (GERM 100 or permission of instructor)
(3) GERM 103: German Phonetics (Prereq: LING 130 or permission of instructor)
(3) GERM 150: German Civilization: the Great Migration through the Age of the Reformation
(3) GERM 151: German Civilization: 17th Century to Present
(3) GERM 192: Seminar

(3) Elective: Select one upper division German course in consultation with a faculty advisor.

(9 units) from the following:
(3) GERM 110: Survey of German Literature to Classicism
(3) GERM 111: Survey of German Literature from Classicism to Poetic Realism
(3) GERM 112: Modern German Literature
(3) GERM 140: Love and Marriage in the Medieval Epic
(3) GERM 141: German Mythology and Legend
(3) GERM 142: German Folk Literature, Legend and Lore
(3) GERM 143: King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table in Germany
Note: A minor is recommended with the German major; consult advisor.

SUBJECT MATTER PROGRAM
(Pre-Credential Preparation)

The requirements for the Subject Matter Program in German are the same as those for the major with the following additions:
(2) GERM 105: Advanced German Language Lab
(3) GERM 106: Advanced Conversation
(Prereq: GERM 5B or permission of instructor)
Candidates must contact the German Waiver Program Coordinator, in the Department of Foreign Languages, to have their transcripts reviewed, to schedule an oral interview in German and to assess their subject matter competency. Teaching credential candidates must also complete the Professional Education Program in addition to other requirements for a teaching credential. Consult the German credential advisor for details and contact the Teacher Preparation Program office (Eureka Hall 216, 178-6403) for application procedures and requirements. A minor in another subject which can lead to a Supplementary Teaching Credential is strongly recommended.

MINOR IN GERMAN REQUIREMENTS

The minor in German requires 12 upper division units. Students are required to meet with a minor advisor for course selection.
