Japanese Writing System:
Practice makes perfect - spend 15minutes a day for kanji. Make sure to review kanji in Lesson 3, too. Kanji in Lesson 4 focus on days of week and location words (See. p 302-303). Go to Usagi Page (http://www.csus.edu/indiv/s/sheaa/projects/genki/). Go to the Kanji section, and the kanji list. Whe you click each character, you will see its stroke order. You may utilize Kanji Flashcard (pdf) at the Usagi's site.

What is kanji?

There are a couple of nice resource pages for students of Japanese languages: they include the information on Kanji dictionary. Please check out the following sites:

  • L3 kanji Quiz かんじクイズ(writing kanji) similar to exercises in textbook (p. 300) and workbook (p. 130).

  • Read L4 ぶんぽう (bunpoo/grammar) before the class (Textbook pp. 107-108 (〜があります/〜がいます) & describe a picture on page (p. 115)

  • KEY STRUCTURE
    Place に X があります "There is/are X (non-living thing)."

    Place に X がいます "There is/are X (living thing)."

PlaceXあります
X = non-living things
There is X in place.

  • Student Union  バーガーキング  あります
    There is a Burger King in the Student Union.

    ワッパー(whopper) は おいしいですね。

    whopper is delicious.

*Place should be marked by (NOT で) when the verbs of existence such as ある/いる are used.
*Place usually comes at the beginning of the sentence.
*The thing description is usually followed by the particle

Xあります
X=non-living things
I have X

  • おかねが あります (I have $)
  • くるまが あります(I have a car)

If you do not have them,

  • おかねが ありません。(I don't have $)
  • くるまが ありません。(I don't have a car)

    Little bit advanced note here.
    You can also say,
    おかねありません。(I don't have $ at least)
    is a topic particle. It also has a function to compare things. When it is used, it carries out the nuance of "at least." In the above sentence, I don't have money at least or I don't have money but I have something else. When it is used, it will replace structure particles such as (が =subject particle を = object particle) or use together with discourse particles such as で、に、と (で、に、と)

X あります
X=nonliving things
An event X will take place.

When do you use います?

Student Union に ともだちいます。
ともだち=living thing

There is a friend in the Student Union.
Or I have a friend in the Student Union.

Student Union にねこいます。
ねこ=living thing
There is a kitty is in Student Union.

Make sure to use ありますfor non-living things, and use います for living things. As for plants and trees, we use あります - although they are living things, they do not move...(Well many of you may want to argue about this.)
