KEY STRUCTURE
Place
に X があります "There is/are X (non-living thing)."
Place
に X がいます "There is/are X (living thing)."
*Place にX があります
X = non-living things There is X in place.
Student Union に バーガーキング が あります
There is a Burger King in the Student Union.
ワッパー(whopper) は おいしいですね。
whopper is delicious.
*Place should be marked by に (NOT で) when the verbs of existence such as ある/いる are used.
*Place usually comes at the beginning of the sentence.
*The thing description is usually followed by the particle が
*X があります
X=non-living things
I have X
おかねが あります (I have $)
くるまが あります(I have a car)
If you do not have them,
おかねが ありません。(I don't have $)
くるまが ありません。(I don't have a car)
Little bit advanced note here.
You can also say, おかねはありません。(I don't have $ at least) は is a topic particle. It also has a function to compare things. When it is used, it carries out the nuance of "at least." In the above sentence, I don't have money at least or I don't have money but I have something else. When it is used, it will replace structure particles such as (が =subject particle を = object particle) or use together with discourse particles such as で、に、と (では、には、とは)
*X が あります
X=nonliving things An event X will take place.
*When
do you use います?
Student Union に ともだちがいます。
ともだち=living thing
There is a friend in the Student Union.
Or I have a friend in the Student Union.
Student Union にねこがいます。
ねこ=living thing
There is
a kitty is in Student Union.
*Make sure to use ありますfor non-living things, and use います for living
things. As for plants and trees, we use あります - although they are living
things, they do not move...(Well many of you may want to argue about
this.)
