Program Tentative Itinerary

Sunday, June 27: Late afternoon arrival in Guatemala City.

Monday, June 28: Orientation in hotel and brief tour of Guatemala City. Afternoon departure for Panajachel, on the shores of scenic Lake Atitlan.

Tuesday, June 29: Boat trip on the lake to visit the charming village of San Juan La Laguna, known for its weaving and paintings, and the larger Santiago de Atitlan, home of the venerated deity known as “Maximón.” (Don’t forget to track him down and bring him an offering of cigarettes or rum!)

Wednesday, June 30: Afternoon departure to Chichicastenango, known for its world-famous outdoor textile market held each Thursday and Sunday. Watch the vendors as they arrive with their wares to set up for market day.

Thursday, July 1: Market in the morning. (Be prepared to haggle and don’t miss the regular “local” market right next to it.) Late afternoon transfer to Quetzaltenango, Guatemala’s second-largest city.

Friday, July 2: Morning visit to Almolonga, known for its wonderful vegetable market, and trip to nearby village of Zunil. Afternoon tour of Quetzaltenango.

Saturday, July 3: Transfer to Antigua and meeting of families.

Academic Session and family homestay in Antigua: July 3 - July 31

Saturday, July 17 - Sunday July 18: Weekend trip to the unspoiled Pacific coast beaches of Monterrico.

Saturday, July 31: Early-morning departure for the Caribbean coastal city of Livingston, home to the Garifuna people, with a brief stop beforehand in Quiriguá to see the fascinating Mayan stellae.

Sunday, August 1: Trip north to the island city of Flores for a quick lunch. Late afternoon arrival at the incomparable Jungle Lodge in Tikal National Park.

Monday, August 2: All-day visit to the spectacular Mayan ruins of Tikal.

Tuesday, August 3: Return to Guatemala City, with stops along the way to see the mysterious Caves
of Candelaria and the elusive national bird, the quetzal.

Wednesday, August 4: End of program in Guatemala City. Return home!
