Master of Arts in
Spanish (Antigua, Guatemala Summer Program 2010)
The Sacramento State Master of Arts in Spanish summer program offers participants a total Spanish immersion experience, featuring homestays with selected host families and an academic program of courses, educational tours, and lectures by scholars and authors. The programs provide college students and Spanish teachers with the opportunity to perfect their competence in the four language skills (comprehension, speaking, reading and writing) and the chance to gather personal examples and anecdotes from their daily immersion in the culture of the country. Through both formal instruction and informal contacts with people, participants will gain a cultural and linguistic understanding of Spanish. The directors and teaching faculty are all experienced academic tour leaders who understand the importance of a solid but pleasant academic experience.
The Summer 2010 program will take place in Guatemala, cradle of Mayan civilization. Many people consider Guatemala to be the true Central American experience, with its varied geography, unique flora and fauna, and enigmatic peoples and cultures. After a brief stay in the capital, Guatemala City, we will head to glorious Lake Atitlan, one of the most stunningly beautiful lakes in the world and home to more than a dozen surrounding Mayan villages. After this, we will head to Chichicastenango to see its world-famous textile market before making our way towards Quetzaltenango, Guatemala’s second city.
The homestay and classes will be held in the picturesque colonial city of Antigua, nestled among three volcanoes in the Western Highlands. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, Antigua will delight you with its cobblestone streets, baroque churches, and pastel-colored facades. At the conclusion of the homestay, we will resume our cultural tour of the country and head east toward Guatemala’s Caribbean coast to visit the rambunctious port town of Livingston, home to the Garifuna people. The program will then culminate with a visit to the majestic Mayan ruins of Tikal, which many say rival Machu Picchu. In addition, midway through the academic session we will take an overnight trip to the charming Pacific beaches of Monterrico.
In response to requests from graduate students and Spanish teachers alike, the Sacramento State Master of Arts in Spanish program was created to offer the opportunity for summer study abroad at the graduate level in the areas of Hispanic literature, culture and linguistics. Each summer our department offers a full six-week graduate program in either Mexico, Spain, Central or South America which combines a cultural tour with a month of intensive classes. The program enables participants to fully immerse themselves in a specific Spanish-speaking country and its culture, customs and history so they can, in turn, share their knowledge and experiences with others.
Participants take courses in literature, linguistics, and culture and civilization. The program is open to both our regular Sacramento State graduate students in Spanish as well as those taking summer courses. Students can finish all course work in as few as three summers and complete the culminating requirement the following November or March (thesis, project or comprehensive exam) to earn their master’s degree. Students may elect to take courses over four summers or skip summers provided that the M.A. is finished within a seven-year period.

Education at Sacramento State will not permit any specialized logistical or financial deviations to the fee structure or travel schedule for the Master of Arts in Spanish Program. All students will pay the same program cost, except when additional units beyond the six units are needed. Students must be in Guatemala City on the scheduled date and participate in the homestay and all official tour activities.
Guatemala 2010 is a specially-designed travel study program, and while in the past some modifications were permitted with individual students’ logistical plans, this has complicated matters for the College of Continuing Education.
