Final Program Dates
Tuesday, June 25: Arrival in Guatemala City. Group dinner.
Wednesday, June 26: Morning orientation in hotel and tour of Guatemala City. Afternoon departure for Panajachel, on the shores of scenic Lake Atitlan. Tour of Panajachel.
Thursday, June 27: Boat trip out on the lake to visit the charming village of San Juan La Laguna, known for its weaving and paintings, and the larger Santiago de Atitlan, home of the much-venerated deity known as “Maximón”. (Don’t forget to track him down and bring him an offering of cigarettes or rum!)
Friday, June 28: Open day.
Saturday, June 29: Afternoon departure to Chichicastenango, known for its world-famous outdoor textile market held each Thursday and Sunday. Watch the vendors as they arrive with their wares to set up for market day.
Sunday, June 30: Market in the morning. (Be prepared to haggle and don’t miss the regular “local” markets right next to it. They are fascinating and will provide you with some amazing photos.) Late afternoon transfer to Antigua and meeting of families.
Classes and family homestay in Antigua: June 30 - August 1
Thursday, August 1: Early-morning departure for the Caribbean coastal city of Livingston, home to the Garifuna people, with a brief stop beforehand in Quiriguá to see fascinating Mayan stellae.
Friday, August 2: Trip north to the island city of Flores for a quick lunch. Early evening arrival at the incomparable Jungle Lodge in Tikal National Park.
Saturday, August 3: Morning and afternoon visit to the spectacular Mayan ruins of Tikal. Late afternoon transfer to airport in Flores for our brief flight back to Guatemala City.
Sunday, August 4: End of program in Guatemala City.
