Master of Arts in Spanish Application Guidelines

Pathways to the Master of Arts in Spanish

The Master of Arts in Spanish offers two pathways to completion:

Campus Pathway – Regular study on campus during the fall and spring semesters.
Summer Pathway – Travel study program offered in Spain, Mexico, Guatemala or Peru during the summer term.

Note: Admission to the Master of Arts in Spanish does not reserve a spot in the Summer Pathway. Those selecting the Summer Pathway to the Master of Arts in Spanish must also complete the appropriate paperwork. To apply to the Summer Pathway, please refer to Part III.

Summer and Fall 2015 Application Deadlines

Interested students are welcome to apply for admission to the degree program as early as Fall 2014. This includes ALL perspective students regardless of the pathway of study selected. The application deadline for admission to study in the Summer Pathway or Campus Pathway for Fall 2015 is: March 1, 2015.

Master of Arts in Spanish Program Admission Requirements

Prospective students must have:
Baccalaureate degree
Minimum 3.0 GPA in your last 60 attempted semester units (90 quarter units)
• Completion of all program course prerequisites:
• Spanish 100 or an equivalent course in literary analysis
• Spanish 102 or an equivalent course in Spanish phonetics
• Spanish 103 or an equivalent course in advanced Spanish grammar
• One course in Peninsular literature
• One course in Latin America literature
• One course in Hispanic culture

Students who are not interested in the master’s degree but interested in the summer travel study are also welcome to participate. However, those students must hold a bachelor’s degree and be culturally and linguistically comfortable immersed in a Spanish-speaking environment for the duration of the program.

The Application Process

The Sacramento State admission process requires the formal application to be reviewed by both the Office of Graduate Studies and Department of Foreign Languages.

Part I: Applying to the Office of Graduate Studies

File the following with the Office of Graduate Studies prior to the March 1 deadline:
Online graduate school application for admission: https://secure.csumentor.edu/admissionapp/grad_apply.asp
Two sets of official transcripts, only if courses taken from colleges/universities other than Sacramento State

Note: There is a $55 fee to apply to the Office of Graduate Studies and the application must be submitted online. Students should consult the Office of Graduate Studies website for more information on the application process.

Campus Pathway applicants must scroll down and select Spanish. Summer Pathway applicants must scroll down and select Spanish Summer or down to the major code XSPA-CCE on www.csumentor.edu.

Part II: Applying to the Department of Foreign Languages

To formally apply to the Department of Foreign Languages, please submit the following in one envelope by the March 1 deadline:
Cover letter/Statement of Purpose: Briefly introduce yourself and provide contact information (phone number, mailing address and email address) and state specifically which semester you are applying for (fall or summer, including the year), followed by a one-page Statement of Purpose (your interest in the program) written in English or Spanish.
A five-page writing sample in Spanish (from any previous coursework) that was graded by an instructor.
Two letters of recommendation if you did not complete your bachelor’s degree at Sacramento State.
Copy of transcripts (the official transcripts submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies will be forwarded to the Department)

Part III: Applying to the Summer Pathway Program (Not required for students that wish to participate in the Campus Pathway)

Student interested in participating in the Summer Pathway program in Oaxaca, Mexico or have been accepted into the master’s program must complete and submit the Travel Study Application and a deposit of $2,500 payable to Sacramento State should accompany each participant’s application, to be postmarked no later than March 1, 2015 to:
