In order to be eligible to take the G-Exam, undergraduates must have completed Span 142 or 101, Span 103 and Span 106, or be currently enrolled in Span 106. Graduate students must take the exam during the first semester they enroll in their graduate courses.
The G-Exam is administered once per semester, usually in October and in April. Eligible students may sign up in the Main office of the Department of Foreign Languages (MRP 2051).
The minimum peprcentage required to pass each section of the G-Exam is 70% (14 out of 20 points). Normally, the student must wait one semester before retaking the failed section or sections of the exam. Before retaking a section of the exam, students will have the opportunity to meet with a member of the G-Exam Committee to discuss in detail the strengths and weaknesses of their individual exams. If the student fails to pass over 60% of the exam, he/she must retake the entire exam. A second retake or attempt will require a petition to the Spanish Graduate Exam Committee stating how the student has prepared for the retake and the reasons for the poor performance.
The G-Exam is given once per semester. Students should check with the Department of Foreign Languages office or with Dr. Joseph A. Klucas in MRP 2033 for a G-Exam Sample Sheet and for the specific time and place of the exam. Those students enrolled in the Sacramento State Three-Summer M.A. Program residing distant from Sacramento State, may contact the Graduate Coordinator for specifics.
