We are certain that your academic experience with
us will enhance and broaden your interest in Hispanic Studies. Our
Master of Arts is a balanced program of studies which covers the
four main areas of the discipline: Hispanic culture and
civilization, Spanish linguistics, Latin American literature and
Spanish literature. Our graduates are well prepared to either continue
studies leading to the PhD. or find careers in related
fields such as government service, the teaching profession, or
foreign and domestic business enterprises.
A very special feature of the CSUS Master of Arts in Spanish Programincludes the opportunity for study abroad in México, Spain, Costa Rica or South America. Each summer our department offers a full academic program at one of these foreign venues, a program which includes course offerings in linguistics, literature and culture, and a cultural tour of the country in question. (Go to Travel Study Programs for current information.) Many of our local graduate students attend one or more of these centers to earn credit toward their MA degree. It is possible to attend three different summer programs, complete the culminating requirement (Thesis, Project or Comprehensive Exams) and earn the M.A. degree. Through these programs, our students' educational experiences are greatly enhanced by daily use of the Spanish language and broad exposure to various Hispanic cultures, both in Spain and in the Americas. Students live with local families for four weeks as part of this cultural immersion.

of Arts in Spanish Comprehensive Exam Reading List, as

candidates who choose the Comprehensive Examinations option

options).
Due to our national reputation and the growing popularity of our summer programs, it is important for you to decide early on in the academic year whether or not you wish to apply to the summer MA program. There are a limited number of spaces available each year and priority is given to returning students from previous summers. Some programs fill easily five months before they begin, so it is important for you to begin the application process well before the first deadline listed in the brochure in order to ensure a place in the program. Note: Prospective summer students should not send in deposits initially, as they must first have their transcripts evaluated and must also formally apply to the program. If accepted into the program, students then need to apply online to the CSUS Office of Graduate Studies. Go to this page for application instructions: Spanish Graduate Application Process.
We hope that you will join us for the academic experience of a lifetime!
