Professional Experience
-
Wilfrido H. Corral, Chair and Associate Professor, received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in Latin American literature. Before coming full-time to CSUS in 2003 he taught at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, was associate professor at Stanford University and held visiting appointments at Wesleyan University and the University of California, Davis. Within the Spanish area, he teaches the range of graduate seminars offered for the MA in Spanish American literature, from colonial to contemporary prose. At the undergraduate level, he has concentrated on survey courses, contemporary narrative, and the essay. He is the author and editor of nine books, the most recent of which is his collection of essays El error del acierto (contra ciertos dogmas latinoamaericanistas) (Quito: Paradiso Editores, 2006).
- With Daphne Patai of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, he edited Theory’s Empire: An Anthology of Dissent (New York: Columbia University, 2005), which was chosen by London’s Times Literary Supplement as a “Book of the Year” in criticism. Theory’s Empire is reviewed enthusiastically in The Wall Street Journal, MLN (Johns Hopkins University), The Hudson Review, Philosophy and Literature, and other international and national publications thus far. Besides articles, critical notes, and reviews in European and American journals, with Leonardo Valencia he edited the textbook Cuentistas hispanoamericanos de entresiglo (New York/Boston: McGraw-Hill, 2005). He is working on a book based on his teaching of the new Spanish American narrative, from the perspective of “masters and disciples.”
