Congratulations to Jared Schuckert and Alejandra Soria for receiving the Fall 2012 Jack Mrowka Scholarship awards. Special thanks to our major donor Tim Hallinan, Professor Emeritus, and the faculty of the Geography Department for their continued support and generous contributions.
Three geography students participated in the 2012 Undergraduate Research Reception and Poster Session sponsored by Sacramento State’s College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics on Tuesday, Oct 2. The reception recognizes and publicizes undergraduate student research, some of which is supported by scholarships and stipends. The posters presented by the three geography students were “2010 Carbon Emissions Inventory for California State University, Sacramento” by Jacqueline Moore, “Understanding the Carlson Corridor: An Examination of Place and Context” by Aaron Owens, and “Material Sources for The WELL” by Alena Rybachuk. Fall 2011 graduating senior Jeffrey Kernen (Metropolitan Area Planning) and Spring 2012 graduating seniors Alena Rybachuk (Geographic Information Systems and Analysis), Borys Lahoda (Geographic Information Systems and Analysis), Jonathan Nicholas (Geographic Information Systems and Analysis), and Matthew Watson (Geographic Information Systems and Analysis) received certificates from the Department of Geography for distinguished achievement in the undergraduate curriculum. Alena graduated Summa Cum Laude and Jonathan, Matt, Jeffrey, and Borys, Magna Cum Laude. Matt was the Geography Department’s outstanding student nominee for the Natural Sciences and Mathematics Dean’s Award, and he was honored along with the nominees of other NSM departments at a college reception on April 27, 2012.
Students Jacqueline Moore and Daniel Skaggs presented their cartographic work at the California Geographical Society annual meeting held at UC Davis, April 27-29, 2012. Jacqueline’s map was titled “California Particulate Matter (PM10) Emissions in 2008: Natural vs. Anthropogenic.” Daniel’s was “Tornado Location and Frequency.” These maps had their genesis in Professor Michael Schmandt’s cartography class (GEOG 105). Student Heather Downing was on the meeting planning committee.
