Endowment/Scholarship

An endowment providing student scholarships is one of the most precious and significant gifts that a university can receive and that a donor can give. Colleges and universities with endowments designed to provide substantial scholarship support are advantaged in many ways. They can attract the brightest and the best students by offering scholarships that cover fees, housing, books and other expenses. Our ability to recruit and shape our student body can be greatly enhanced.

Students are our most valued treasure. Not only does an endowed scholarship make a college education a reality, it benefits the social and economic fabric of the Capital Region. Over half of Sacramento State graduates live and work in the Sacramento area. These graduates provide valuable contributions to business, industry, education and non-profit organizations. A well educated work force is the cornerstone of democracy.

The California State University, Sacramento enrolls over 27,000 students in seven colleges with 63 majors.

Many students struggle with finances to achieve college degrees. Many of our students (59%) must work while attending class. This often leads to prolonging graduation. Some students become discouraged and drop out of college life. Recognizing that the University must make every effort to retain students and support their learning objectives, Year Round Operations has been implemented. YRO provides flexible scheduling, thereby shortening the time to graduation. But often this is not enough. Data show us that students who receive scholarship support are much more likely to complete their college careers because of the reduced stress of financial worries and time spent away from campus to work. Research has indicated that students who receive merit-based scholarships are more likely to persist and reach their educational goals. Merit-based assistance supports and encourages academic excellence.

Over the years, many of the Sacramento State alumni and friends have established scholarships, some of them endowed, others not. Many of our graduates who received scholarship support as students remember the blessing and in turn provide scholarship support for current students. Thus, a gift for scholarships magnifies itself; the impact of scholarship assistance on students can and does continue.
