COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Building a welcoming campus and developing community support are two of the core goals of Destination 2010. The Office of Governmental and Civic Affairs works with several community partners to help Sacramento State realize these objectives. Below are a variety of events and programs that the Office of Governmental and Civic Affairs has supported logistically or provided guidance.

Presented by the Sacramento Area Regional Technology Alliance and CleanStart, the Clean Energy Showcase will be held at Sacramento State on September 26, 2008. The event showcases the regional technical cluster of excellence in clean technology

2008 State of the City Address
Presented annually by Sacramento Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, the 2008 State of the City Address took place on the Sacramento State campus. Business and government leaders reviewed past City accomplishments, outlined future goals and objectives for the City of Sacramento and brought attention to issues that are important to the region and business community.
Sacramento State hosted Building the STEM Pipeline:
Partnerships for Innovation, a day-long dialogue where more then 150 industry leaders, educators, community representatives and governmental officials began to develop a strategy for expanding and strengthening the regional STEM pipeline.
Working with the Sacramento Regional Transit District, we helped to host this one-day conference for more than 200 attendees. Much of the discussion revolved around how new technological developments in buses can improve public transit and contribute to curbing global warming.

This event brought representatives from industry, government and education to a one-day event to discuss ways that the STEM pipeline in the greater Sacramento area can be strengthened through collaboration.

Youth Leadership Conferences
The African-American Youth Leadership Program and The Chicano Latino Youth Leadership Program sponsor week-long summer conferences at Sacramento State where hundreds of high school students throughout California have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills, learn about their culture and gain exposure to various educational and career choices. Sponsored by Sacramento State and New Faze Development, the New Faze Baseball Camp held in 2007 featured former players such as major leaguers Ricky Jordan, James Mouton and Greg Vaughn, along with Sacramento State players and coaches. Targeted at urban young people ages 8 to 18, the event offers high-level instruction to those who otherwise would not be able attend such camps.

The Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE) seeks to strengthen parent involvement in the education of elementary, middle and high school students through a nine-week course for parents. The California State University system in partnership with PIQE reaches out to parents in underserved communities to raise the number of students from underrepresented populations that attend the CSU and other colleges and universities. In the Sacramento area, the PIQE courses have been taught in English, Spanish, Hmong, Russian and Punjabi.
