Ask for advising! Do you want to be the graduating senior who discovers in her last semester that she doesn't have a required course she thought she had already taken? Or the fellow who got in over his head because he started with the toughest required course without the background needed?

The University and the Department strongly urge and encourage you to see a faculty adviser every semester, certainly once a year. You are responsible for meeting the requirements of the major; having a faculty adviser will help you choose appropriate courses and make certain you are making timely progress toward your degree.

How do you get an adviser? Find a faculty member who teaches in your area of interest and ask him or her to be your adviser. Check the list of faculty by their specialty areas. International Relations concentration students must select an adviser from among those faculty who teach international relations and/or comparative government courses.

Registering for Classes

Sources of information regarding course selection include (1) the CSUS Catalog (consult your specific catalog year for major requirements); (2) course syllabi, on file in the Department office in Tahoe Hall 3104; (3) books required in classes you are considering-check at the Hornet bookstore; and (4) your faculty adviser. It is a good idea to develop a tentative plan for the major in consultation with your adviser, although it is perfectly acceptable to change your plan using a course substitution and waivers form.

To register, you will choose your classes from the online schedule at the CSUS website and clicking on Quick Links and scrolling down to Class Schedule and then use https://my.csus.edu/ (My Sac State). which will let you know immediately if a class is available or not. You will have an assigned Registration Day during the first phase of https://my.csus.edu/ (My Sac State). based on your class level and number of units completed. It is increasingly important to register during your assigned registration date, since many courses are in great demand and fill quickly.

Graduation Contract

Every graduating senior must file a graduation contract which is available online from the CSUS website by clicking on admissions and then on forms. Be sure to file before the deadline two semesters prior to the one in which you expect to graduate; this will ensure you receive graduating senior status in My Sac State and therefore will get the courses you need to graduate.

Your graduation contract should be signed first by an adviser and must be signed by the Department chair.

The Government Department tries to make it possible for students to complete the general Government major (not the IR concentration) attending only in the late afternoon or evening. The required core classes are offered regularly at night; however, they may not be offered every semester at night. They will, however, be offered at night at least once each academic year. Students attending only at night will need to plan ahead.
