California State University, Sacramento DEPARTMENT OF GOVERNMENT 2008-2009 SCHOLARSHIPS Deadlines for Department Applications: Noon, Friday April 24, 2009 The Department of Government has a variety of scholarships with monetary stipends which are awarded each year to students who apply and are chosen to receive them. Applications and selection are during the Spring semester with usual application deadlines in April. Eligibility is open to undergraduate and graduate students, usually majors in Government combined with certain specifications. Interested students who think they may be eligible should pick up a copy of the scholarship requirements and application forms in the Government Department Office, Tahoe Hall, room 3104 early in the Spring semester. In addition, talk to your faculty adviser or to any professor in the department about your potential for application. A faculty sponsor is often required. An outline of the scholarships follow. ROBERT G. THOMPSON SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: $1,200 towards one semester’s tuition (Fall 2009) Applicants must be a Government undergraduate major, and enrolled full-time (12+ units) during the time the scholarship grant is awarded. They must have earned at least 30 units and have sophomore standing at the time of the receipt of the award and have completed at least one semester at CSUS and possess a minimum GPA of 3.0 overall. Applicants are required to provide one letter of recommendation from a faculty member, provide transcripts (unofficial transcripts are sufficient), and submit an essay of no more than two double-spaced, typewritten pages in response to the following: The ideal of democracy has been the cornerstone of our political system in the modern world, especially in the United States. But as we enter the 2lst century we have to seriously ask ourselves: Is democracy still possible? Can we make it work? Financial need may be considered, but is NOT determinative. Robert G. Thompson Scholarship Application DOUGLAS McDANIEL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Award: Two (2) $700.00 scholarships awarded in Fall 2009 Open to juniors, seniors, or graduate students of CSUS who are Government majors with a focus on International Relations at CSUS, with not less than half-time study at CSUS. Applicants must have completed at least two semesters at CSUS with an overall minimum GPA of 3.0 AND a 3.50 in the major. Applicants will provide transcripts (unofficial transcripts are sufficient) and two (2) letters of recommendation: One from a faculty member and one from a person (this could be faculty, also) who is able to judge ability based on appropriate practical field or job experience (i.e. and internship). Applicants will submit an essay of no more than two double-spaced, typewritten pages on the following topic: How do you see your education in International Relations relating to your future plans? Preferences will be given to applicants with a strong academic record, demonstrated interest in public service, senior or graduate standing, prior experience studying or traveling outside the United States, and have studied one or more foreign languages. Douglas McDaniel Memorial Scholarship Application DONALD R. GERTH SCHOLARSHIP Award: $1,000 scholarship towards one semester’s tuition (Fall 2009) Applicants must be a junior, senior, or graduate student currently enrolled at CSUS who are a Government major or a Government major with an International Relations concentration, with not less than half-time study at CSUS, both at the time of application and during the time of receipt of the award. Applicants must have completed at least 12 semester units in residence at CSUS (excluding units graded CR/NC), have a minimum GPA of 3.0 overall, as well as at CSUS and also in the major. Applicants must be enrolled in at least one course within the Government Department at the time of the award. Applicants will provide transcripts (unofficial transcripts are sufficient) and submit an essay of at least one page, double-spaced, typewritten, stating their expected career objectives. Financial need may be considered in the selection process; however, it is not determinative. Donald R. Gerth Scholarship Application PAT AND BILL DORMAN SCHOLARSHIP IN GOVERNMENT AND GOVERNMENT/JOURNALISM Award: $500.00 awarded in Fall 2009 This award is open to any undergraduate or graduate student at CSUS who is a major in Government, Journalism or Government /Journalism (with an interest in diversity issues) at the time the scholarship is awarded. This scholarship is open to freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors classified or unclassified, or those seeking a second bachelor's degree and have a minimum GPA of 2.0. Applicants must be enrolled full-time (12+ units) at CSUS. Applicants must provide transcripts (unofficial transcripts are sufficient) and submit an essay of at least one double-spaced, typewritten page that expresses how either Journalism, (“The Fourth Estate”) or Government most usefully can contribute to leveling society’s playing field for minority Americans. Financial need may be considered but is NOT required. Pat & Bill Dorman Scholarship Application JACK LIVINGSTON FELLOW IN POLITICAL THEORY & AMERICAN INSTITUTIONS SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: $1,000 scholarship towards one semester’s tuition (Fall 2009) Applicants must be enrolled full-time (12+ units) at CSUS as a junior, senior, or graduate student at the time they receive the award and have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or better in their major field. The applicant must also identify a government faculty sponsor or one will be assigned by the department. In addition to submitting the application, the student must provide transcripts (unofficial transcripts are sufficient) and submit a proposal of no more than two double-spaced, typewritten pages, outlining their plans for a one-semester required activity:

Outside Scholarship Opportunities GRADUATE EQUITY FELLOWSHIP A $1,500 grant for students who have experienced economic and educational disadvantages. Students must meet financial and academic requirements and be classified or conditionally classified in a graduate program at Sacramento State. On-line application: http://www.csus.edu/graddiv/gradEquity.stm Application Deadline: March 28, 2009 SALLY CASANOVA PRE-DOCTORAL PROGRAM Award: $3000 The Pre-doctoral program is designed to increase the pool of potential university faculty by supporting the doctoral aspirations of individuals who are: current upper division or graduate students in the CSU system; economically and educationally disadvantaged, and U.S. citizens or permanent residents. The grant provides up to $3,000 for students to use for: exposure to research in their chosen fields; visits to doctoral-granting institutions, national symposiums or professional meetings; membership in professional organizations; subscriptions to academic journals; graduate school application fees; graduate examination fees, and books and materials. Website: California Pre-Doctoral Program Application Deadline: March 13, 2009 CHANCELLOR'S DOCTORAL INCENTIVE/FORGIVABLE LOAN PROGRAM Award: $30,000 This program is designed to increase the diversity of persons qualified to fill instructional faculty positions at campuses in the CSU system. This is a competitive program directed by the CSU system, but it is open to doctoral students at accredited universities across the country. Provides loans of up to $10,000 per year up to a total of $30,000 within five years for students enrolling in doctoral programs. Applicants must be applying to a doctoral program, obtain sponsorship from a CSU faculty member, and have aspirations of returning to teach in the CSU system. Website: Chancellor’s Doctoral Incentive Program Applications Deadline: February 13, 2009 JACK KENT COOKE FOUNDATION GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP Award: $50,000 This scholarship varies depending on the cost of attendance and other scholarships/grants received. The maximum award is $50,000 per year for the length of the approved graduate degree program, up to six years. To be eligible, applicants must be a college senior or a recent graduate, plan to begin a graduate degree program in fall 2006, meet academic and financial requirements, and be nominated by their institution. Application Deadline: February 13, 2009 Website: Jack Kent Cooke Foundation ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIPS Award: $2000 Initially funded by donations from life members of the Alumni Association, the Alumni Association Scholarships are now broadly supported with the goal of helping students pursue their goals of higher education at Sacramento State. This has been accomplished because of donations, both large and small, from those that value the education they received while attending Sacramento State.
