On
Evaluating Sites
Students should take any of the excellent short courses offered by
the University Library. The reference library can be accessed here.
Also important is the CSUS
Library Home Page.
As experienced users of the Web know, not only is there great difficulty
finding the best material for a project (because so much exists), but
Web sites must also be evaluated critically before their contents are
used for research.
Though somewhat out of date, Politics on the Net by William
Mann (Que, 1995) is useful. In addition, the following links should
be consulted:
Lori Ricigliano of the University of Puget Sound has an excellent guide.
Esther Grassian of the UCLA College Library has developed another site,
Thinking
Critically about World Wide Web Resources.
Randy Bass, Director of the American Studies Crossroads Project, has
developed a lexicon
for site evaluation.
Widener University has a useful page, as well: Teaching
Critical Evaluation Skills for WWW Resources.
UNIVERSITY
COMPUTING AND COMMUNICATIONS SERVICES has an excellent site
with links devoted to fair
use and copyright issues.
