Brief Biography:
James DeShaw Rae is an assistant professor of Government at Sacramento State University. James is originally from Iowa and did his bachelor’s degree in Political Science at the University of Iowa. From 1997-2000, he worked in Washington, DC as a researcher at the United States Institute of Peace (USIP), a non-partisan think tank funded by the U.S. Congress to help prevent, manage and resolve international conflict. At USIP, his area of focus was on the Cambodian peace process, sectarian conflict in Northern Ireland, and war crimes in the former Yugoslavia. While there, he did a masters’ degree in International Affairs at American University. He received his PhD in Political Science at the University of Hawai‘i in 2005. His most recent publication is Peacebuilding and Transitional Justice in East Timor (Boulder, CO: Lynne Rienner/First Forum Press, 2009).

Areas of research and interests:
James’ research interests focus on human rights and international law, specifically efforts to promote peace, justice, and reconciliation in post-conflict societies. Although his interests are global, his geographic area of research tends toward East and Southeast Asia.

Personal interests & hobbies:
I am an avid sports fan, particularly for my alma mater the Iowa Hawkeyes. I also enjoy all forms of travel and exploration.
