Graduate GPA Requirements and Academic Regulations

Graduate Academic Actions

Graduates in classified or conditionally classified standing in master's degree programs must maintain a cumulative and semester GPA of at least 3.00 to remain in good standing. A semester GPA of less than 3.00 will result in Academic Warning. If while on Warning a student earns a semester GPA of less than 3.00, the student will be subject to Academic Dismissal.

Academic Dismissal is sometimes referred to as 'disqualification' because students who become Subject to Dismissal are ineligible to register at Sacramento State unless they are approved for reinstatement on an academic contract.

Post-baccalaureate students in credential programs or with unclassified standing will be subject to dismissal if the grade point average falls below 2.50.

All graduate students who meet GPA requirements will be placed on Academic Warning if they earn one or two NC grades in a semester. Grades of NC earned in subsequent semesters will result in Probation, Continued Probation, or Dismissal, depending upon the number of NC grades earned and the semester GPA.

Reinstatement

In order to be considered for reinstatement to the University, students who are academically dismissed (disqualified) must demonstrate that subsequent events in their lives have enhanced their likelihood of academic success. This likelihood may be demonstrated in a number of ways, including but not limited to completion of courses with passing grades at other colleges.

The Reinstatements Petition is available at the Office of Graduate Studies or online.  The Petition must include a statement of prior circumstances and current situation, along with copies of records showing academic progress since the disqualification. The Office of Graduate Studies will review the Petition and/or forward it to the major department for a recommendation. If approved, the student will be reinstated with an achievement contract, and the Office of Graduate Studies will review grades at the end of the semester to decide whether the student may continue at CSUS.

Administrative Academic Probation

Students may be placed on Administrative Academic Probation for the following reasons: withdrawal from all or a substantial portion of their courses in two successive terms or in any three terms, repeated failure to progress toward a degree or other program objective, and/or failure to comply after due notice with an academic requirement or regulation.

Students who do not meet the conditions for removal of Administrative Academic Probation may be subject to Administrative Academic Disqualification.
