- Capital Fellows Programs
The Capital Fellows Programs consist of four individual fellowships:

These nationally recognized fellowships, sponsored by the Center for California Studies at California State University, Sacramento, are an outstanding opportunity for college graduates to engage in public service and prepare for a future career. Fellows work 10-11 months as full-time staff members in the California State Assembly, Senate, Executive Branch or within the California Court System. They gain first-hand experience in governing the most diverse state in the nation and a sense of personal involvement in the leadership of California society.
The only prerequisite for the programs is a four-year college or university degree and a demonstrated interest in state government and public service. Fellows come from all economic, cultural, political, career and educational backgrounds, and no previous legislative or political experience is required.

Coastal Management Fellowship Program
Agency: U.S. Department of Commerce
Any student completing a master's, doctoral or professional degree program in natural resource management or environmental-related studies at a US university is eligible. Students from a broad range of environmental programs are encouraged to apply. Program matches students with state coastal zone programs to work on projects proposed by the state & selected by the fellowship sponsor.

- The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans (up to $36,000)
This program is to provide opportunities for continuing generations of able and accomplished New Americans to achieve leadership in their chosen fields. The Program is established in recognition of the contributions New Americans have made to American life and in gratitude for the opportunities the United States has afforded the donors and their family.

- Research in Industrial Projects for Students (RIPS)
The RIPS program provides an opportunity for high-achieving undergraduate students to work in teams on a real-world research project proposed by a sponsor from industry or a national lab. RIPS recruits its students from all over the world. The students, with direction from their faculty mentor and industrial sponsor, spend nine weeks learning about the problem, mastering the latest analytical approaches and techniques to solve it, and developing report-writing and public-speaking skills to be able to make professional presentations about the progress and results of their work to a scientific audience.

National Science Foundation - Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP)
The National Science Foundation aims to ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the United States and to reinforce its diversity by offering approximately 1,100 graduate fellowships in this competition. The Graduate Research Fellowship provides three years of support for graduate study leading to research-based masters or doctoral degrees and is intended for students who are in the early stages of their graduate study. The Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) invests in graduate education for a cadre of diverse individuals who demonstrate their potential to successfully complete graduate degree programs in disciplines relevant to the mission of the National Science Foundation.

Summer Student Science Internships at the National Science Foundation
Offered through the Quality Education for Minorities (QEM) Network, this program is a ten-week summer internship that will take place May 25July 31, 2009 at the National Science Foundation in Arlington, VA. Students majoring in the following areas are encouraged to apply: Computer science (Junior or Senior with experience in Java programming and/or database), Geosciences/ Environmental science, Biology (at least 5 needed), Atmospheric science/Meteorology, Mathematics, Chemical/mechanical/electrical/biomedical engineering, Political science, Journalism (someone with creative writing experience, with a science background), Social science, Science education.
Each internship will provide round-trip airfare, assistance with local transportation costs, summer housing on a local college campus, and a stipend ($3,000 for undergraduate students and $4,000 for graduate students), payable in three installments.
To be eligible for science internships at NSF, an applicant must be a citizen or national of the United States and must be a rising junior or senior, or a graduate student, currently enrolled in a science or engineering degree program at a minority-serving institution or at a non-minority institution with a track record in producing science and/or engineering graduates from underrepresented groups. Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Program
This program, offered through the U.S. Department of Education, provides fellowships to students of superior academic ability, to pursue doctoral or Master of Fine Arts level graduate study in the arts, humanities, or social sciences. Eligibility is limited to students who have been accepted to or are attending graduate school, but have not yet completed their first year of study.

- Graduate Fellowships in the Physical Sciences
This program, offered through the national Physical Science Consortium, supports graduate work at any NPSC member institution in any field of the physical sciences. It supports the first two or three years of graduate school, depending on the employer who is sponsoring the fellowship, with the possibility of continuation for several more years, for a maximum of six years and over $200,000 total (including stipend, tuition, fees, and salary for two summers). Special emphasis is on underrepresented minorities and women, but all qualified students are welcome to apply.

- National Estuarine Research Reserve Graduate Fellowships
Offered through the U.S. Department of Commerce, this program includes four sub-programs: The Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve (New York), The Tibor T. Polgar Fellowship Program (New York), The Padilla Bay Reserve Project (Washington), and The Tijuana River Reserve Project (California).

- Graduate Dissertation Fellowships
Offered through the Economic History Association, these fellowships are intended for members of the Association who are currently writing their dissertation. Several $10,000 per year awards available, as well one Sokoloff Fellowship award of $15,000.
EHA also offers 2 grant programs: the Exploratory Travel and Data Grants and Annual Meetings Travel and Hotel Subsidies.

Educational Testing Services offers several programs for Graduate Students, including:
ETS Summer Internship Program for Graduate Students - Research internships for full-time doctoral students.
Harold Gulliksen Psychometric Research Fellowship Program - Fellows study at their universities during the semester and conduct a research project. Then they participate in the Summer Internship Program.
Postdoctoral Fellowship Award Program - Postdoctoral fellows conduct independent research under the mentorship of ETS researchers.

Minority Fellowship Program in Sociology of Mental Health
This program, offered through the American Sociological Association, supports students who have strong interests in the sociology of mental health. The program seeks to attract talented minority students who are interested in mental health issues and to facilitate their placement, work and success in graduate programs. The program funds up to 10 one-year fellowships with an annual stipend of up to $20, 772.

- National Defense Science & Engineering Graduate Fellowship
This program, offered through the U.S. Department of Defense, awards 36-month portable fellowships to new graduate students to support full-time study and research, leading to doctoral degrees in math, engineering, science, or other disciplines of DOD interest. Fellows can attend any U.S. College and do not incur military or any other service obligation.

Christine Mirzayan Science & Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program
These fellowships, offered through the National Academy of Sciences, are designed to engage graduate science, engineering, medical, veterinary, business, public policy, and law students in the analytical process that informs the creation of national policy-making with a science/technology element. Eligibility is open to graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and those who have completed graduate studies or postdoctoral research within the last five years. Fellows spend 12 weeks at the National Academies working under a senior National Academies staff member mentor on substantive projects on science and technology policy analysis. The stipend amount is $8,000.

Smithsonian Fellowship and Internship Programs
Graduate-level, Pre-Doc, Post-Doc and Senior fellowships support research at the Smithsonian in the following areas: anthropology, archaeology, astrophysics & astronomy, earth sciences, ecology, behavioral and environmental sciences, evolutionary & systematic biology, history of science & technology, art history, and social & cultural history of the U.S. The stipend and length of fellowship vary. These internships, offered through the American Museum of Natural History, support undergraduate and graduate projects relating to collections or ongoing research interests of the curatorial staff in the museum of in the field. Collections & research are focused on North, South and Meso-American archaeology & ethnology, Asian, African & Pacific ethnology, and Human Biology. Internships also awarded in Collections Management, Archives and Conservation.

- Graduate Equity Fellowship Program ($1,500)
A $1,500 grant for students who have experienced economic and educational disadvantages. Students must meet financial and academic requirements and be classified or conditionally classified in a graduate program at Sacramento State.

- People, Prosperity, and the Planet Grant (P3)
EPA will award as many as 50 grants up to $10,000 each to student teams. The money will be used to research and develop sustainable solutions during the academic year. In the following Spring, the teams will be invited to bring their designs to Washington , D.C. to compete for EPA's P3 Award, which includes an additional award worth up to $75,000 to further develop and implement the project in the field.

- Exploratory Travel and Data Grants
Offered through the Economic History Association, these grants are intended for doctoral students working on dissertations in economic history. They provide funding for specific research purposes, such as visiting archives or purchasing microfilm). The amount of the grant varies by project, but will not exceed $2,500.

- Annual Meetings Travel and Hotel Subsidies
Offered through the Economic History Association, these are travel subsidies for presenting preliminary thesis results at the poster session of the Association's Annual Meetings. The awards include up to $800 for air of train transportation, as well complimentary hotel rooms and discounts on registration fees and meals.

- German Studies Research Grant
Offered through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), this program provides grants to promote the study of cultural, political, historical, economic & social aspects of modern & contemporary German affairs from an inter- & multi-disciplinary perspective. Candidates must be nominated by department &/or program chairs. Masters & Ph.D. candidates are eligible. - Assumption Program of Loans for Education (APLE) $19,000
The State program designed for students who are entering the teaching profession, enables students who are enrolled in a program leading to an initial teaching credential to have educational loans assumed by the California Student Aid Commission. Administered by the California Student Aid Commission, the program assumes up to $19,000 in outstanding educational loan balances in return for four consecutive years of qualifying teaching service.

- Forgivable Loan/Doctoral Incentive Program $30,000
Designed to increase the diversity of persons qualified to fill instructional faculty positions at campuses in the CSU system. This is a competitive program directed by the CSU system, but it is open to doctoral students at accredited universities across the country. Provides loans of up to $10,000 per year and up to a total of $30,000 within five years for sponsorship from a CSU faculty member, and have aspirations of returning to teach in the CSUS system.

- California Pre-Doctoral Program $3,000
Designed to increase the pool of potential university faculty by supporting the doctoral aspirations of individuals who are current upper division or graduate students in the CSU system, economically and educationally disadvantaged, and U.S. citizens or permanent residents. The grant provides up to $3,000 for students to use for exposure to research in their chosen fields, visits to doctoral-granting institutions, national symposiums or professional meetings, membership in professional organizations, journal subscriptions, graduate school application fees, test fees, and books and materials.

- Helene M. Overly Memorial Graduate Scholarship
This program, provided through the Women's Transportation Seminar, provides scholarships to women pursuing graduate studies in transportation or a related field, such as engineering, planning, or public administration. The recipient of the Sacramento area award will receive a $1,000 scholarship and will have their name forwarded for consideration for the international award in the amount of $6,000. Eligibility is limited to women enrolled in a graduate program in an eligible field, with a GPA of at least 3.0.

- Jack Kent Cooke up to $50,000
This scholarship varies depending on the cost of attendance and other scholarships or grants received. The maximum award is $50,000 per year for the length of the approved graduate degree program, up to six years. To be eligible, applicants must be a college senior or a recent graduate plan to begin a graduate degree program in fall 2006, meet academic and financial requirements, and be nominated by their institution.

- Waste Management Research Scholarship
Offered through the Environmental Research and Education Foundation, this program recognizes excellence in Master's (up to $5,000 per year for two years), Doctoral and PostDoctoral (up to $12,000 per year for three years) waste management research and education. Recipients are chosen based on credentials and potential contributions to the solid waste industry and its scientific community. Dow Jones Newspaper Fund Summer Internships in Editing and Reporting
This fund supports annual summer internships in business reporting and newspaper copy editing. Free pre-internship training seminars are held on college campuses and weekly salaries start at $350 for a minimum of 10 weeks. Interns who return to college full-0time the following fall will also receive $1,000 scholarships from the fund. The application process includes completion of a copy-editing or business reporting exam.

- Native American Congressional Internships
Offered through the Morris K. Udall Foundation, this program provides 12 Native American students (members of recognized Tribes) with $1,200 plus airfare, dormitory lodging and a daily allowance to learn about the Federal Government. Participants will also receive practical experience in the legislative process and governmental proceedings. Dissertation support is also available for individuals working in environmental policy/conflict resolution.

Graduate Sciences Program (GSP)
Offered through the U.S. Department of Commerce, the goal of this program is to increase opportunities for students in NOAA-related fields to pursue research and educational training in atmospheric, environmental or remote sensing oceanic sciences at minority serving institutions (MSI). The program will provide students with educational training in math, science, economics, law, social science and engineering, as well as entry-level employment and hands-on research and work experience at NOAA. Recruitment begins each October and closes each January.

- Academically Related Activities (ARA)
Travel funds will be awarded to students who are presenting papers at scholarly and professional conferences, selected for competition to perform musical or dramatic pieces, or invited by a recognized gallery to exhibit artistic works. Awards will not normally exceed $300 for in-state conferences and $500 for out-of-state conferences. Funds will be made available ONLY toward travel and lodging. Funds are distributed as applications are submitted on a first come, first served basis.

The purpose of the Student Academic Development Program fund, established with Sacramento State discretionary lottery monies, is to support activities that extend students' educational experiences beyond the normal instructional environment.
