Admission to the Doctor of Physical Therapy program is highly competitive.  To be considered for admission applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree:  Attain a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university prior to enrollment in the program.
  • GRE:  Taken within the last five years with a minimum analytical score of 3.5, and a minimum quantitative score of 29th percentile.  Have your GRE score report sent to Sacramento State reporting code 7588.
  • TOEFL:  Applicants who do not possess a bachelor's degree from a post-secondary institution where English is the principal language must demonstrate competency in English by scoring a minimum of 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based), or 80 (internet-based) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Submit those scores with your PTCAS Application and CAL STATE APPLY.
  • Prerequisites:  Complete prerequisite coursework with a minimum 3.00 GPA.  Applicants may have up to 4 prerequisite courses to complete when they submit their application.  They must complete at least 2 of the outstanding prerequisites by the end of fall semester, and the remaining 2 courses to be completed in the following Spring and/or Summer semester (a maximum of 1 of the remaining courses may be completed during the summer).
  • Observations Hours:  Complete a minimum 100 total hours of volunteer/work experience under the direction of a licensed physical therapist.  A minimum of 25 hours are required in an inpatient setting, and a minimum of 25 hours are required in an outpatient setting.
  • Letters of Recommendation:  Submit three letters of recommendation, two from licensed physical therapists, and one from a college professor.

Applications that are incomplete or do not meet the minimum requirements will not be considered for review.

  • Human Anatomy with Lab;  1 semester (4 units)
  • Human Physiology with Lab; 1 semester (4 units)
  • Psychology; 2 semesters (6 units); 3 units general, 3 units additional
  • Statistics; 1 semester (3 units)
  • Chemistry; 2 semesters (8-10 units)
  • Physics; 2 semesters (8 units)
  • Biomechanics or Kinesiology (upper division only);  1 semester (3 units)
  • Exercise Physiology (upper division only); 1 semester (3 units)

Applicants with Foreign Documents

Applicants applying with transcripts from outside the U.S. must complete at least 8 units of prerequisite course work by the end of the Fall semester prior to application submission.  In addition to applying to PTCAS, applicants with foreign transcripts must apply to the University and submit their transcripts by October 1st to allow for verification time. Admission to the Doctor of Physical Therapy program is very competitive.  Meeting all admission requirements qualify an applicant for the program, but does not guarantee admission to the program.
