RPM: Commercial Recreation, Tourism & Hospitality Management

Welcome to the exciting world of Commercial Recreation - "The Business of Leisure!" The World Tourism Organization has recently listed tourism as the world's largest industry. Las Vegas continues to build new and larger casinos, and Macau (China) has now matched Las Vegas in gaming revenue. Orlando theme parks have hit attendance records, new hotels are always being built and mega-events like the Olympics continue to attract millions of visitors. Electives in this area of the Recreation and Park Management Concentration focus on the basics of entrepreneurial businesses and the skills needed for working with for-profit , commercial recreation agencies (e.g., resorts, casinos, hotels, cruise lines , theme parks, event planners and travel agencies).
In addition to the RPM course courses (see the university catalog), courses for students interested in Commercial Recreation, Tourism and Hospitality Management may include:

- RPTA 132: Campus Recreation
- RPTA 139: Conference and Meeting Planning
- RPTA 154: Management of Recreation Facilities
- RPTA 182: Travel and Tourism
- RPTA 184: Hospitality Administration
- RPTA 185: Commercial Recreation Administration (prerequisite: RPTA 180)
- RPTA 189: California Wine and Agri-Tourism
Supportive Courses (electives) in RPM can be freely exchanged between electives in Community Recreation Management; Park and Recreation Resource Management; and Commercial Recreation, Tourism and Hospitality Management.
RPTA 100 and RPTA 122 do not count towards the major.
Recreation and Park Management requires 600 hours of pre-internship and a 400 hour internship. Students in Commercial Recreation, Tourism and Hospitality Management often pursue internships in other parts of the state of California and United States. Students have found internships at Walt Disney World, Hyatt Regency Hotels, Club Med, Raley Field, Disneyland, Marriott Hotels, Hilton Hotels, and locations in Napa or Sonoma Valleys. There are numerous opportunities.
