Mona Siegel is currently Associate Professor of History and Director of
Graduate Studies at California State University, Sacramento, where she
regularly teaches courses on modern European history, world history,
gender history, and history and memory. Siegel’s research examines the
history of pacifism and cultural reconciliation in Europe in the era of
the two world wars. Her first book,
The Moral
Disarmament of France: Education, Pacifism, and Patriotism, 1914-1940,
was published by
Cambridge University Press in 2004 and was awarded the 2006 History of
Education Society Outstanding Book Award. Siegel is currently
working on two article-length research projects. The first,
“Disarming Hatred: History, Memory, and Franco-German Reconciliation
from World War I to the Cold War,” examines the decades-long effort of
French teachers and historians to turn chauvinistic, scholastic history
narratives into a vehicle for cultural diplomacy. The second
explores early feminist anti-colonial activism, with a particular focus
on the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom and its
engagement with Asian women in the 1920s.
