GENERAL GUIDELINES

Before the beginning of your first semester

Schedule an advising appointment with the History Department Graduate Coordinator. Students in the Humanities Concentration should also meet with the Humanities Graduate Advisor.

During your first semester – the WPE

You will need to either pass or be exempt from the WPE (Writing Proficiency Examination). If you feel that you have already met the requirements and should be exempt from the WPE, please obtain and complete the Writing Proficiency Exam Waiver Form. You can get the form online at the CSUS Office of Graduate Studies - Forms and Manuals. If you are not exempt, sign up to take the WPE at the Cashier’s Office in Lassen Hall 1001. See the Class Schedule booklet for exam dates and more information.

Course Load and Seminars

You are required to take 18 units of 200 level seminars: History 201, 202, 280, 281, 200 and an additional 280 or 281. Your 9 units of electives may be at the 100 or 200 level. It is recommended you enroll in a minimum course load of six units per semester. One course should be a seminar. Students in the Standard Program should try to complete the seminars in the following order: History 201 and 202 (either one first), then History 280 and 281 (either one first, and your additional History 280 or 281), finally History 200. Students in the Humanities Concentration should take History 201 in their first semester and History 200 near the end of their program. Consult with the Humanities Department for the sequencing of required seminars and substitutions.

After completing nine units of classified coursework

Decide on your culminating experience and obtain the appropriate form from the History Department office – Petition for Approval of Thesis or Petition for Approval of Examination. If you choose the examination, obtain the department Policy for Masters Degree Comprehensive Examination. You will not be permitted to advance to candidacy until your petition is approved. Select your readers according to area specialty. Secure the signatures of your readers and return the form to the History Department office. Projects are allowed ONLY in the Public History option. Note: If you change topics you must fill out another Petition for Approval sheet and secure your new advisor signatures and the Graduate Coordinator’s signature.

After completing twelve units of classified coursework

including one 200-level seminar and maintaining a 3.0 GPA

File an Advancement to Candidacy form. This MUST be submitted to the History Department the semester prior to registering in your culminating experience – History 500 or Humanities 500. The deadline dates for submitting the form to the office are November 15 for spring registration and April 15 for the fall semester. You cannot be advanced to candidacy unless you have passed or are exempt from the WPE. You will not be allowed to register for HIST 500 or HRS 500 if you are not advanced to candidacy. No exceptions will be made. Forms are available in the History Department or from the Graduate Center.

Your last semester and AFTER completing “I” grades on your record

Enroll in History 500 (if in the Standard option) or Humanities 500 (graduate students in the Humanities option has a choice of HIST 500 or HRS 500). You MUST complete ALL “incomplete” grades before enrolling. To enroll in HIST 500, pick up the “Special Problems Petition for Culminating Requirement” form from the History Department. Fill it out and circle thesis or exam. You must also obtain your major field advisor’s signature. Turn in the form during the first two weeks of the semester that you would like to be enrolled in Hist 500. For guidelines on thesis format, purchase the CSUS Guide for Thesis/Project Format available at the Hornet Bookstore. For a fuller discussion of general policies and procedures please see the Office of Graduate Studies website.

Subsequent semesters

If you do not complete your thesis or take your M.A. examinations the semester of enrollment and have completed all other coursework, you must file the Eligibility for Continuous Enrollment. This form will enroll you in History 599 or Humanities 599 and is available from the Graduate Center if you do not receive one in the mail. You must refile the form each semester to maintain continuous enrollment. If you have not completed your thesis or taken your examination by the end of three semesters of 599, you must re-register for History 500 or Humanities 500 and pay the full fees.

Upon completion

For Thesis – For guidelines on thesis format, purchase the CSUS Guide for Thesis/Project Format available at the Hornet Bookstore. You may also download it in pdf format. You must secure all the signatures required for your thesis and submit one copy of your title page to the History Department office. Deadlines for submitting theses to the Graduate Coordinator for approval are: Fall semester, December 15 ; Spring semester, May 15; Summer, August 1. You must adhere to these deadlines and remember to coordinate the deadline dates with your readers.

For Comprehensive Exams – You are responsible for coordinating the day and time for each exam with your major advisors, and arrange the day and time for your oral presentation that is convenient for your advisors and the Graduate Coordinator. Then inform the Graduate Secretary ahead of time when you are planning to take your exams so a room can be reserved for you. M.A. examinations must be scheduled before finals week each semester. Exams will be scheduled during the intersession only for compelling reasons.

Graduation

File a Graduation Petition with the Graduate Center, paying the requisite fee. Petitions must be filed by March 1 to have your name appear in the spring semester commencement program and November 1 for the fall semester. You are responsible for signing up to participate in the commencement ceremony.

Loss of Candidacy

You have seven years to complete your degree. This rule is strictly enforced. Loss of candidacy is determined seven years from the date of your first coursework counted toward the degree listed on your Advancement to Candidacy form. The expiration date for your candidacy is noted on the bottom of your Advancement to Candidacy form. Leaves of absence are counted in the seven-year limitation. Re-instatement after loss of candidacy is possible but is cumbersome, expensive, and time consuming.
