Supplemental Instruction Leader, Peer and Academic Resource Center
The Peer and Academic Resource Center (PARC) is a Sacramento State program that utilizes the talents and knowledge of students to help their peers. As Katie Healy--an alum of the MA program and one of the first to work with PARC--said, PARC is about "successful students promoting student success." PARC offers supplemental instruction (SI) positions as part of its academis support program for students enrolled in historically-challenging general education courses. With regards to History, that generally means 17A, 17B, and a few others. Graduate students are encouraged to pursue the competitive postings for SI positions with PARC, as this is an amazing opportunity to gain invaluable classroom experience. If selected, you would work closely with a faculty member from the History Department, getting a peek behind the curtain to see how professors do what they do. At the same time, PARC will provide you with crucial training in culturally responsive pedagogy, study skills development, and more. This is an excellent way for those students interested in teaching at any level to gain invaluable experience and get paid for it at the same time. Our students who have served as SIs report it is one of the most rewarding experiences in their student careers.
Students who are interested are encouraged to speak with Dr. Rebecca Kluchin and to visit the PARC website for more information.
