Diseases that are spread through sexual contact are usually referred to as "sexually transmitted diseases," STDs for short. In recent years, many experts in the field of public health have suggested replacing STD with a new term, STI -- sexually transmitted infection. Why? The concept of disease implies a clear medial problem with some obvious signs and symptoms. In truth, several of the most common STDs have no signs/symptoms, or mild signs/symptoms that can be easily overlooked. So, the sexually transmitted virus or bacteria can be described as creating an "infection," which may or may not result in a "disease." For this reason, in some of the published literature, the term "disease" is replaced with "infection."
STI/STD information is available through our Health & Wellness Promotion office or by calling 916.278.6461.
If you are enrolled in the Family PACT Program, these services may be at no cost. ![]()
