New boxing center aims to build fitness and confidence

Boxing is a sport growing in both popularity and controversy. Those who protest it claim that it is too brutal and promotes violence. Others view it as a way to maintain not only peak physical condition, but a strong mental condition as well, because it teaches confidence and self-defense. These positive values have been instilled in many of the fighters who have stepped into PrimeTime Boxing and Fitness Gym, Sacramento's newest premiere boxing facility. The success of the newly-opened gym can be accredited to recent CSUS graduate Cary Williams.

New-look Hornets swept by Tigers
The Sac State volleyball team played the University of the Pacific Tigers very closely for three games on Tuesday night, but nonetheless were unable to score. It suffered a 16-14, 15-13, 15-13 loss.

Hornet Football wins season opener
Hornet Football took a step in the right direction Saturday night with a 25-12 victory over St. Mary's. Sac State won its season opener for the first time under John Volek and ended a three-year drought against the Gaels.

Women's soccer looks to improve on '97-'98
Winning athletic teams are not usually the norm here at Sacramento State, but don't tell that to the women's soccer team. Despite losing their home and season opener 1-0 to the visiting Tigers of the University of Pacific, expect CSUS to battle for a Big Sky conference title and improve upon last years 6-12-2 record. Though finishing well under the .500 mark, the Hornets finished with a very respectable 4-2 Big Sky mark and were in the hunt for the title until the final whistle.

Men's soccer opener ends in a draw
Despite a shutout by Hornet goalkeepers, the men's soccer team could only manage a draw in their season opener.
