Hornets host Golden Gate showdown for Homecoming

October 16, 1998 (5 p.m.)

This year's Homecoming Game will feature two of the league's California teams, Cal State Northridge and our own Sac State Hornets. The Matadors come into the game at 4-1 overall and 3-0 in league. The Hornets (2-4, 0-3) will try to bounce back from their disappointing loss to Portland State last weekend.

Sac State running back Charles Roberts looks to add to his season total of 1,096 yards rushing this weekend. Roberts has rushed over 150 yards in five consecutive games. He is currently seventh on the single-season top 10 list for Sac State and has moved up to number five on the CSUS career rushing list.

For the first time in a few weeks, the Hornets will go into a game with three quarterbacks. A.J. Bernhardt will try to continue his effectiveness this Saturday against Northridge.

Entire story ...

Dinner and Digger
The annual basketball tip-off dinner is ready to whet the appetite of Sacramento area basketball fans. Perhaps one of the most quintessential events and biggest publicity opportunities for the CSUS men's basketball team, the dinner has been able to bring in marquee guest speakers. Last year, basketball guru and ESPN analyst Dick Vitale was the honored guest of the evening. This year, CSUS is privileged to welcome Digger Phelps, another ESPN analyst and former college basketball coach, on October 22.

Mark Bryant: Lockout -- Who are you Kidding?
The worst thing you can do, public-relations wise, is not play the game.

Rumble in the Bayou
Watch out Monroe, here they come! The CSUS water ski team is off to the national championships this weekend in Monroe, Louisiana. Coming off a second-place finish in the Western Conference regional championships two weeks ago, the Hornets are primed and ready to compete for the national championship. They will face the 11 best water ski teams from around the country in the two-day event.

Winless start in Big Sky: Four-game skid heading into homecoming this weekend
What started off as a 2-0 start has quickly plummeted to a four-game losing streak as CSUS was outgunned 58-31 Saturday night in Portland. The Hornets fell to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the Big Sky Conference.

Golden opportunity for CSUS Hockey Club
Ripe, rippin, and raring to go, the Sac State Ice Hockey Club is on the verge of opening what will be a season where every game is worth paying attention to.

Women's soccer at 7,000 ft.
The CSUS women's soccer team headed south last weekend to begin Big Sky conference play, and unfortunately their winning ways went south too. The Hornets were unable to put a ball in the back of the net in a 3-0 loss to Northern Arizona University and a 2-0 loss to CSU, Northridge, digging themselves a tough hole to get out of.
