UTAPS, we listen

QuickBits commandeered a trusty Ford Taurus to tear around the parking lots Monday and check up on those wacky parking permit vending machines. To our pleasant surprise, we found all but two of the machines in operation. The exceptions are the machines in Lot 7, and on the fifth floor of the parking garage.

But, the Lot 7 machine had some grease pencil markings, indicating that the machines at Lot 8 and at Info Booth 2 on State University Drive South were working. As for that machine in the garage that was supposed to have been removed, it looks like parking services has had a change of heart. A new message says it will be operating soon.

Now if only ...

Pink propaganda on the doors of the Union over the weekend advertised the fact that the Hive is now open from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays. While QuickBits thanks the powers that be for hearing our earlier plea to open the trough to the Sunday hungry, we do have one complaint.

Namely, the starting time. We would like to point out that, typically, the 49ers kick off at 1:15. Opening the doors at 2 p.m. means we're not catching the action until the second quarter. Can we talk? President Donald Gerth

Gerth sightings

The world-traveling President Donald Gerth was sighted at venues much closer to his home base of Sacramento Hall Thursday.

The Big Guy dedicated the new University Union at 2 p.m. He then hot-footed it over to the University Theater to introduce Professor Otis Scott at the John C. Livingston Lecture at 3 p.m.

Family photos displayed

A photo-text exhibit entitled "Love Makes a Family: Living in Lesbian and Gay Families" will be featured through the end of the month at the Multi-Cultural Center. The works by Massachusetts photographer Gigi Kaesar include excerpts of interviews with gay and lesbian families. Coming on the heals of the recent defacing of "Coming Out Week" messages, this free program has been touted as a response to homophobia that shows the love and strength of the families in the photographs.

The Multi-Cultural Center is located in Library room 1010.
