Local sorority stopping the violenceBy Lane KasselmanHornet Staff Writer Published October 23, 1998 In an effort to raise money to fight domestic violence, Alpha Chi Omega chapters across the country will be hosting the Carnation Challenge. In Sacramento, the event will be a two-kilometer walk around the CSUS campus on Sunday. Women Escaping a Violent Environment, an organization that helps victims of domestic violence, will benefit from the walk. Along the walk, participants will view signs detailing statistics related to domestic violence. A donation box will be at the event for donations of food, clothing, and toys for local W.E.A.V.E. chapters. Participants at this Sundayís event will be given a chance to raise domestic violence awareness on their own, by wearing one of the many free purple ribbons available from Alpha Chi Omega. Alpha Chi Omega is expecting 200 people for the walk. "This is something we can build on for the future," said Karla Sullivan, chairman of the Carnation Challenge for Alpha Chi Omega. She hopes this yearís event will set a trend for more awareness of the problem and more participation in next yearís event. Registration and check-in will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday at the CSUS stadium ticket booth. Anyone interested in participating in the Carnation Challenge can call Miranda Dokey at 971-3717.
