Women's volleyball sweeps NAUBy Sarah WhiteHornet Staff Writer Published November 24, 1998 It was a big sweep into the Big Sky. Sac State's women's volleyball team swept Northern Arizona University 3-0 Saturday in their last conference games of the season, giving them their second consecutive Big Sky Conference title. These wins earned the Hornets the host site for the Big Sky Tournament this weekend and a record of 23-8 overall and 15-1 in the Big Sky. "It is a big relief. We really wanted to host the Tournament," said head coach Debbie Colberg. She said it was also a big relief to beat the No. 1 team. The seniors on the team closed out their regular season careers with impressive contributions; Carissa Buie and Rebekah Capel had 23 and 11 kills respectively. In the first match, the Hornets barely let the Jacks get in a hit. They took and early lead, 4-1, and then Angela Lewis got the serve. She helped score seven consecutive points, taking the Hornets to an 11-1 lead. Two more side outs, and the Hornets had taken the first match 15-1. Game No. 2 started off with the Hornets in control again. They took an early lead and Capel tallied 11 kills while Buie covered the net and had six kills. NAU fought back this match but fell in the end 15-6. Last game, last chance to make a comeback. Too bad. The Jacks couldn't keep the Hornets away from making the plays. They opened with an 11-0 lead and gave up three points before they axed the Jacks 15-3. The plans for the tournament: "Everyone has a clean slate, we just need to make sure everyone is playing well," said Colberg. She said they have the user advantage for winning and "we need to keep continuing the consistency."
