Sacramento State may not have left Grizzly Stadium a winner but they certainly can hold their heads high following the Hornets 41-38 double-overtime loss to Montana Saturday.

Montana sophomore receiver Etu Molden’s 23-yard reception from freshman quarterback Nick Walker ended the game. "We are disappointed," Sac State head coach John Volek said.

"If we clean up the mistakes in the first half and capitalize on the turnovers our defense created, we win the game." After a dismal first half that saw the Hornet offense establish no rhythm, a capacity crowd of 18,648 fans watched as Sac State erased a 28-3 deficit by outscoring the Grizzlies 25-0 in the final 11 minutes of regulation.

Sac State junior quarterback Ricky Ray’s five-yard touchdown pass to Senior tight end Chris Kelly tied the game at 28-28. Ray finished his first start for the Hornets 25-for-44 with 233 yards passing and four touchdowns, all to Kelly.

Kelly’s four touchdowns were the most by any receiver in one game in school history.

Sac State junior running back Charles Roberts finished the game with 122-yards on 25 carries. This was his 13th-straight 100-yard plus game.

Defensively, the Hornets gave up 514 yards of total offense, but the four interceptions and one fumble allowed Sacramento State to get back in the game.

Volek did take one positive from the team’s devastating loss.

"We proved that we can beat any team in the country on Saturday," he said. "We can’t let this loss negatively effect us. We need to grow from this and build every week."
