Alliance thanks governor during gay rights observanceBecky Hurtt Monday is National Coming Out Day for the Queer-Straight Alliance of CSU Sacramento. Not only are they celebrating National Coming Out Day, but the Alliance is having several students and members sign a giant thank you card to Gov. Gray Davis, who has recently passed a bill benefiting the gay rights community. The Hate Crimes Prevention Act, an amendment added to an earlier appropriations bill, now includes sexual orientation, gender, and disability to the victims of the current epidemic of hate crimes. The Alliance, known until last year as BGLASS, began in the 1970's by the Human Rights Campaign. It was established to help lesbian and gay Americans feel more comfortable about coming out and being themselves. "We are here for political activism and support for the homosexual community on campus," President Sean Duncan said. The Alliance's mission is to educate group members as well as campus outreach on issues such as sexual orientation, gender, and the transgendered community. | |
