Sac State Football loses at NorthridgeCourtesy of CSUS Sports Information OfficeNORTHRIDGE, Calif -- Sacramento States road woes continued as the Hornets fell to 0-3 away from home with a 36-14 loss at the hands of the Matadors of Cal State Northridge. The Matadors capitalized on a pair of early Hornet miscues, converting two Ricky Ray interceptions into 10 points in the first eight minutes of the game. After three plays and a punt, Cal State Northridge increased the lead to 17-0 by capping a14-play, 98-yard drive with a DeJuan Gilmore four-yard TD run. The Hornets cut the lead to 11 (17-6) when Ray connected with Lamont Webb on a 91-yard TD pass midway through the second quarter. Cal State Northridge wasted little time regaining control of the game as Matador quarterback Marcus Brady connected on a 74-yard TD pass to Terrance Jones on the very next offensive play of the game. The Hornets scored one more TD with 2:47 to play in the fourth quarter when Ray found Webb in the left corner of the end zone on a 23-yard scoring strike. On the day, Brady connected on 28-of-39 passes for 333 yards and two touchdowns and Matador running back Jaumal Bradley rushed for 132 yards and a TD as Cal State Northridge became just the second 1999 foe to rack up over 500 yards of total offense on the Hornet defense. After being held to under 100 yards for the first time in 17 games last week, running back Charles Roberts returned to his old ways, carrying the ball 25 times for 167 yards. However, Cal State Northridge kept Roberts from scoring a TD for the first time in five games. Webb, a senior from Tracy, Calif., also had one of his best performances of the season, pulling down eight catches for a team-high 157 yards and two TDs. His 91-yard scoring reception from Ray was the longest pass play of the 1999 season. |
