One man’s campaign against the rec center

In the campaign to build a new recreation center, senior Jim Maroun is one student who is taking a strong stance against it. Recently he has been standing in the main entrance to the Library handing out "Don't be Duped!" fliers.

"The goal of what I'm doing is to get students to say no to the initiative for the new rec center and that this is really a bad deal for the students," said Maroun.

"Last semester we said no to this project and the first thing our elected representatives, ASI, did was to go to spend more than $50,000.

"If you look at the pamphlets that they pass out on campus, it says you could have a weight room, you could have a indoor jogging track, you could have a soccer field; it's 'could' on all these aspects. Then when you look at the ballot language it just promises you a huge building that is going to cost you $25 million with things that you could get. There is also a clause in there that they can adjust for inflation and for maintenance without a vote. And that is a big hole."

Maroun's website includes his arguments at ww.lanset.com/homeworld/duped.
