Not all is fun and games in the CSUS arcadeJoe Dastagirzada
The Games Room Video Arcade located in the University Union came into existence in September 1975. It contains about 12-15 different machines and games. There are fighting games, sports games and even Tetris to entertain and relax CSUS students. "I think the game room is a good stress relief after studying," said senior Mark Anthony. "I try to have a variety of games to put in the arcade. But, the most popular games are the most violent games," said Richard Schiffers, Associate Director of the Union. Recently there have been complaints about the game room. Apparently some students "hog" certain games denying other students the chance to play them for up to several hours. "The arcade doesn't have a time limit to play a game, so players can be on a machine for hours," said Schiffers, "There's not a viable way to keep track of that and not cause difficulties for the players." According to Schiffers, approximately 95 percent of those who use the arcade are students but it is actually open to anyone. The game room was designed with CSUS students in mind, according to Schiffers, though faculty, staff and guests are also welcome. "The Union staff is open to all suggestions that can provide greater service to our students," said Schiffer. "To expand the game room would not be a prudent move at this time," said Schiffer. Despite the recent complaints there are no current plans to enlarge the arcade. "The Games Room Video Arcade provides a divesion from the stress of academic life. The popularity of the space is self-evident by the constant usage," said Schiffer. "I like coming to the game room," said sophomore, Eric Nelson, "It is a good way to meet new people and to make new friends." | |
