Editorial:
It's time to make recycling a reality at CSUS

Published February 10, 1999

Every day the overflowing trash cans scattered around the CSUS campus give clear evidence of the amount of solid waste produced by the CSUS community.

And the lack of a clear and coherent recycling policy that might make some small dent in the tons of trash that are hauled away to the county landfill, at no small cost to the campus.

The campus's recycling program is in disarray, due in no small part to the lack of a coordinator. The position has been empty since September of last year.

The search for a new coordinator has been transferred to Facilities Management and according to Ed del Biaggio, vice president for administration, the campus hopes fill the position within a couple of months. Until then the 75 recycling bins currently stored in at the CSUS recycling center will be gathering dust and rain water, and not helping in the reduction of solid waste.

We wish the administration the best of luck in finding a new coordinator. There is no excuse for a campus this size to not have a fully functioning recycling program. The reactivation of the recycling program should be a top priority.

Until then students, staff and faculty should make every effort to use reusable containers and help reduce the the solid waste generated at CSUS. We will all benefit from the effort if we do.
